According to Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, these improvements will be part of the “Moment 3” update in late May or early summer, and they’ll apply to both single- and dual-screen devices. There are indeed some single-screen foldable devices on the market right now, such as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 and the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED. however, there aren’t many dual-screen Windows PCs yet, especially not foldable ones. Microsoft announced the Surface Neo in 2019, but the product never really came out and the company has stopped mentioning it.

Bowden didn’t elaborate on exactly what improvements would be made, but called them “initial improvements,” so you probably shouldn’t expect too many changes. Right now Microsoft’s development cycle is focused on the “Moment 2” update, which will arrive in early 2023 with a taskbar optimized for tablets and other smaller improvements.

However, Bowden mentioned some additional features that may come with the “Moment 3” update, including updates to the Windows search interface, as well as updates to more built-in applications, possibly to modernize them further. The company also expects many legacy dialogs, such as USB autoplay, to be modernized in 2023 to align with the Windows 11 design language.

A 23H2 version of Windows 11 may be released later next year, but it won’t be as significant as the 22H2 version (Windows 11 2022 update), as Microsoft is now adding new features primarily through Moment updates.

With the RAZR 2022, Motorola finally made an important upgrade to their clamshell folding device’s design, removing the chin present in previous generations. This new folding device from Motorola comes with a 6.7-inch foldable AMOLED screen and a 2.7-inch external AMOLED screen (the largest on our list). Just like the Galaxy Flip 4, the processor on this device is also the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC but steps up RAM capacity to 12GB. It also comes with a dual rear camera setup, but it houses a 50MP main camera and on its front is a 32MP selfie camera. The battery capacity on this device is 3500mAh with 30W fast charging, and it runs Android 12, all of this comes at a retail price of $965.

Huawei Pocket S

This is the second clamshell folding device from Huawei, and it comes with a massive 6.9-inch foldable OLED screen and a 1.04-inch external display (the smallest on the list). It uses the Snapdragon 778G 4G processor with 8GB worth of memory. For its camera abilities, this folding device comes with a dual rear setup that houses a 40MP main camera and on the front a 10.7MP selfie lens. It comes with the largest battery capacity of any clamshell folding device on this list being 4000mAh, and it supports 40W fast charging. The device runs Huawei’s in-house HarmonyOS 3 and retails at a starting price of $850.

These are the best clamshell folding smartphones of 2022 bringing the necessary upgrades from previous generation foldable devices. Other manufacturers are also working on their clamshell folding devices so the competition will soon improve. The likes of OPPO already have their eyes on the industry, by next year we see new clamshell folding devices with new design languages.
