Fedora project team today officially announced Fedora 38 release, the biggest highlight is WorkStations Edition has enabled GNOME 44 desktop environment.

Fedora 38 uses Noto fonts, shortens shutdown times, initially supports a unified kernel, and uses the Xfce 4.18 desktop environment.

GNOME 44 desktop environment was released in March under the codename “Kuala Lumpur”, with the web browser Epihaphy migrated to GTK4 and a new grid view enabled when applications invoke the system’s GTK folder filter.

Fedora 38 is also updated for developers with gcc 13, Golang 1.20, LLVM 16, Ruby 3.2, TeXLive2020 and PHP 8.2 programming languages and system library packages.

FESCo is evaluating a new proposal, hoping to greatly optimize the shutdown and restart time of the Fedora distribution. The current shutdown and restart time of the Fedora Linux distribution takes up to 2 minutes, but the new proposal hopes to reduce the time to 15 seconds.

Red Hat engineers and the Fedora Workstation Workstation Group believe that reducing the 2-minute shutdown window to 15 seconds is sufficient for the maximum time a service needs to be shut down. The shutdown time is still configurable for running services that may take more time to shut down properly and cleanly (such as on some servers).

Now Red Hat is advancing changes to Fedora, awaiting approval from the Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee (FESCo). In the proposal it is written:

"The main benefit of the change is to alleviate a very annoying and embarrassing bug: our users shouldn't just sit around waiting for their machines to shut down. This proposal encourages proper use of the built-in shutdown API."

The Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee (FESCo) has agreed to create new x86_64 and AArch64 ISO images for mobile devices that use the Phosh Wayland synthesizer.

Phosh is a Wayland compositor developed by Purism and other developers as a GNOME-based Wayland shell focused primarily on mobile devices.

A proposal has been made to create a Fedora Linux image with Phosh and intended for use on Fedora mobile devices on x86_64 and AArch64. The proposal has now been voted on by the FESCO committee and will be released with Fedora 38 next spring.

Fedora’s Mobility SIG has packaged Phosh and related packages into a “phosh-desktop” package group. With FESCo approval, the development team has begun developing x86_64 and AArch64 installation images for mobile devices and tablets. In addition, the Fedora Mobility folks are also looking at Plasma Mobile images.

Fedora distributions have been handling package keys and signatures by their own OpenPGP parser for the past 20 years. However, in the upcoming Fedora 38 release, the development team plans to switch to “Sequoia” written in Rust as the RPM package manager.

In the announcement, the development team stated that it does not make much sense to continue to maintain its own OpenPGP parser after a better parser is available. Upstream RPMs have been working to deprecate the internal parser in favor of Sequoia PGP. Sequoia PGP is an OpenPGP library, written in Rust, which focuses on safety and correctness in its design principles.

Fedora developers are eager to port Sequoia PGP to this RPM and hope to see it already in Fedora 38. Switching to this correct OpenPGP parser should result in better security and standards compliance.

Red Hat Red Hat’s engineering team said that in the Fedora 38 development cycle, it will change the BIOS RAID “fake RAID” support method for Fedora. The Fedora installer currently uses DMRAID via the Blivet repository to support BIOS RAID arrays, while Red Hat plans to use MDADM instead.

This is because DMRAID is no longer being actively maintained, and the Red Hat Red Hat team wants to switch to MDADM so that the Fedora installation process has one less dependency (MDADM is currently used for software RAID support) and can drop DMRAID’s systemd activation service.

However, the switch to MDADM has its drawbacks. Until the RAID Disk Data Format is standardized, MDADM does not support all BIOS RAID types. Red Hat Red Hat engineers wonder how many people are still relying on older BIOS RAID arrays that are not supported by MDADM. The Red Hat team has not yet announced a contingency plan or alternative for Fedora, but would like to hear from users before making the switch.
