In 2019 Samsung reached cooperation with AMD, obtained AMD’s RDNA architecture GPU license, this year’s Exynos 2200 processor on the use of AMD GPU technology, but also known as the light of Android, the results of the actual performance rollover, AMD’s powerful GPU performance advantages are not shown.

This loss led to news that Samsung is going to suspend its own Exynos processor, and not long ago Samsung also reached a strategic agreement with Qualcomm, patent licensing extended by 5 years to the end of 2030, and next year’s Galaxy S23 flagship will also be a large number of Snapdragon 8 series processors.

However, Samsung denied the news of Exynos suspension, and now further confirmed that it will continue to cooperate with AMD. Sungboem Park, vice president of Samsung, who is responsible for GPU development, said that the GPU of mobile devices is about 5 years behind compared to the host, and through cooperation with AMD, Samsung can quickly integrate the latest gaming technology into the Exynos 2200 mobile processor.

This year’s Exynos 2200 processor’s Xclipse 920 GPU has is equipped with six computing units, 384 stream processor cores, RDNA2 architecture.

The next generation of Exynos 2300 should use the Xclipse 930 GPU, which will probably have 8 computing units and 512 stream processor cores, and is not sure if it will be upgraded to RNDA3 architecture, which will improve energy efficiency by another 50% and be more conducive to mobile platforms.

From Samsung’s attitude, the Exynos Android Light loss seems not to blame AMD’s GPU head, after all, the overall energy consumption, heat problems are not GPU can not, Samsung’s process and their own architecture optimization or to take the blame.

Samsung denies news that it will stop its Exynos chipset business, following rumors that the company will skip Exynos-powered flagship phones in 2023 and possibly even 2024. The company said during its 2022 second-quarter conference call that it would stop its Exynos business, “which is not true at all,” according to South Korea’s Economic Daily.

“We are currently restructuring our system-on-chip (SoC) business model and are pursuing a plan to strengthen our competitiveness in the medium to long term,” the company explained.

“In particular, we are focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of our next-generation mobile Exynos, and we are trying to maximize market share with key customers by strengthening our partnerships with leading IP companies and starting early development,” the company added.

The announcement comes sometimes after several media outlets reported that Samsung is developing an ambitious custom SoC for its Galaxy flagship. Such a chipset is said to be coming in 2025.

In May a Korean media outlet reported that Samsung would skip the Exynos-based Galaxy flagship models in 2023 and 2024. Samsung issued a response at the time, saying “no specific decision has been made.

Leading industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo partially confirmed the claim a few weeks ago, asserting that next year’s Galaxy S23 series will be equipped with only Snapdragon processors.

Nonetheless, Samsung’s latest statement suggests that the development of the next-generation Exynos processor is underway, but that it will need to overhaul the division to really take on the likes of Qualcomm and Apple.
