Volkswagen has been seen using Tiguan as a test mule and it seems that the model would feature a battery-electric powertrain. It’s been some time since the Tiguan was launched. Yet there is still decent time, not until next year when the first test vehicles appear on road, that we will see the car sporting a new body. The company plans to break this lull by bringing in some modification or the other to the vehicle.

Tiguan used as a mule test

New spy photos spotted the current Tiguan testing an electric drivetrain with drastic changes on the front face. A closed-off portion is seen completely blocking the airflow under the bonnet. Under this blocked top grille opening is seen a refurbished lower grille opening. The car carries an aggressive front bumper design. The spy photos provide too many hints to suggest that these were electric test mules. First, the rear of the car is seen with no tailpipes. The rear also seems to be bearing a lot of load in the spy photos. In addition to this, the covered grille and the burly side skirts also indicate that the model would sport an electric drivetrain.

While Volkswagen is manufacturing more EVs based on MEB, this upcoming model of Tiguan that the company is currently testing could continue to drive on the current MQB platform. This would enable VW to have the freedom of offering the car with mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.

Fans would have to wait at least until sometime next year before they can witness next-gen Tiguan plying on roads as it’s still in its early stages of development.
