Ireland’s largest private electric vehicle charging network EasyGo today announced a new investment plan to build DC fast charging piles in towns and villages, which will be built in old phone booths of the past place.

With the popularity of mobile phones, phone booths have long since become a thing of the past. So Irish telecommunications company Eir and electric vehicle charging network EasyGo started converting phone booths into Tritium EV charging stations about two years ago. This new infrastructure will benefit the community like the public pay phone booths of the past.

EasyGo has committed to deploying 200 Tritium 50kW modular DC fast chargers across Ireland under the scheme, and the company already has 2,400 chargers.

According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, one in seven cars sold in Ireland this year is fully electric, and the country’s popularity of electric vehicles is growing rapidly.

Transport accounts for a third of Ireland’s energy-related CO2 emissions. Increasing the penetration of electric vehicles is a key aspect of Ireland’s climate action plan, which sets a target of nearly 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.
