LG Energy Solution, together with South Korean lithium-ion major SK On, will increase cooperation with U.S. car giant Ford to speed up the North American market, Yonhap News Agency reported. On Friday, LG New Energy said it will supply more battery packs to Ford to meet the latter’s demand for global electric vehicle production.

LG New Energy said it will double the size of its battery production line in Poland, scheduled to start production in 2023, to meet Ford’s battery demand as much as possible due to strong demand for Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit electric commercial vehicle models. LG Energy began supplying battery packs for Ford’s Focus electric hatchback in 2011 and will begin supplying batteries for the all-electric Mustang Mach-E and the all-electric commercial vehicle E-Transit in 2020. Both models will be supplied with batteries.

Building on the three-way partnership, Ford plans to invest $50 billion in electric vehicle research and development by 2026, with annual production estimated to exceed 2 million vehicles. Ford hopes that electric vehicles will account for more than 50 percent of total vehicle revenue by 2030.
