Nokia announced that it will help DOCOMO upgrade its nationwide IP core backbone and enable slicing technology for its bearer network as it launches new 5G mobile services. This network capability enhancement will support fine-grained SLA (Note: Service Level Agreement), greater network scale and network capacity, and flexibility, while improving energy ratios and resource efficiency.

DOCOMO will deploy Nokia’s next-generation 7750 SR-14s core router with an embedded FP5 network processor. The line card based on this chip provides future-proof 800GE capabilities, increasing system capacity by a factor of 3 compared to the previous generation chip, saving 75% of power, and simplifying network evolution by using both FP4 and FP5-based line cards in the same system. This will extend the life of the system and enhance its sustainability as DOCOMO customers’ bandwidth needs increase in the future.

To provide network slicing technology for its mobile services, DOCOMO will leverage the comprehensive segmentation routing capabilities provided by Nokia’s market-proven Service Router Operating System (SR OS) to provide the fine-grained SLAs required by DOCOMO customers for traffic engineering network slicing.

Nokia’s Network Services Platform (NSP) complements DOCOMO’s segmented routing solution with the Path Computation Engine (PCE), which leverages real-time Telemetry technology to automatically optimize IP networks and improve SLA compliance.
