Appearance, this robot has with “Star Wars” BD-1 similar appearance, but the details compared to the original characters are quite simple. According to reports, the droid is trained in simulations based on reinforcement learning and has spent a year practising animation and walking alone.

As you can see in this video, the robot has a very naive pace, with a smooth overall movement response and free head movement. Behind it is an operator who gives commands to it through the control facility.

According to reports, this robot and other Disney Research Center technology and products will be used in areas such as park shows and film and television production. It can travel freely on bumpy roads and has a very distinctive style.

Official information shows that the Disney Research Center (Disney Research) is located in Zurich, Switzerland, is committed to exploring the frontiers of science and technology in various fields, the technology and creative services in the production of the film. Bob Iger announced his departure from Disney at the end of 2021 but rejoined the company as CEO in November 2022. In a recent interview with Time, he confessed that his return to the post was inspired by Steve Jobs.

Source: Times

Bob Iger said in the interview that he had the idea of stepping down as Disney’s CEO in early 2020. Disney’s board of directors then appointed Bob Chapek to take over.

Bob Iger stepped down completely on Dec. 31, 2021, after continuing to serve as executive chairman of the board to help guide the company through the COVID-19 outbreak.

Just 11 months later, however, Disney’s Board of Directors removed Chapek and appointed Iger to serve as Disney’s CEO again in November 2022.

Iger has agreed to stay on as Disney CEO for 2 years, during which time he will help the company find a successor. One of his first tasks will be to refute the never-ending rumours of a Disney-Apple merger.

Iger admits in the interview that there are many differences between returning to Disney and Steve Jobs returning to Apple, but when he looks at the situation at Disney, he unconsciously thinks of Steve Jobs and admits that he was influenced to decide to return to Disney.

The translated part of Iger’s interview as follows:

The most important person who made me make the decision to return to Disney was Steve Jobs. I was fortunate to have close contact with him, and I have had in-depth conversations with him, constantly reflecting on his experience, which has benefited me greatly.

As part of a broader restructuring plan, The Walt Disney Co. has scrapped the small division that developed its metaverse strategy, and about 50 members of the team have lost their jobs, according to people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reported.

White remains with the company, but his new role is unclear, the people said, adding that the division is led by former Disney consumer products executive Mike White. White could not be reached for comment.

The metaverse, a future version of the Internet that blends the physical world with the digital and virtual worlds, is known to futurists, tech executives and investors as the metaverse or Web3. Disney CEO Bob Chapek told CNBC in February that he was interested in the metaverse, calling it “the third dimension of the creative canvas. The third dimension of the canvas,” he said. He said, “[I’m] going to use all the strengths we have as a media company, using Disney + as a platform, to get into the metaverse. But at the same time, we have something that no one else has, and that’s the physical world, our theme parks. So if metaverse means blending the physical and digital in one environment, who can do that better than Disney?”

This restructuring plan of Disney is expected to lay off about 7,000 employees in the next two months.

The Walt Disney Company will cut 7,000 jobs as it seeks to control costs and create a more “streamlined” business, CEO Bob Iger said in a letter sent to employees Monday.

ESPN is not affected by this week’s layoffs, but is expected to be included in future cuts, according to a person familiar with the matter, Reuters reported.

Bob Iger said Disney will begin notifying the first group of employees affected by the layoffs within the next four days. A second, larger round of layoffs will take place in April, with the letter stating that “thousands of people will be laid off. The final round of layoffs will begin before the summer.

Disney announced in February that it would cut 7,000 jobs to save $5.5 billion (currently about RMB 37.895 billion) in costs and make its money-losing streaming business profitable. “The hard reality of many colleagues and friends leaving Disney makes it impossible to take it lightly, as they bring their life’s passion to their work at Disney.”

A source confirmed that one of the first areas of layoffs was in TV production and acquisitions, which has already led to the departure of executives.

According to foreign media reports, Disney announced that it will lay off 7,000 employees worldwide, accounting for about 3% of its global workforce, the layoffs are part of the company’s $5.5 billion cost-cutting plan announced yesterday.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement that the company is undergoing a “major transformation” that management believes will improve the profitability of the company’s streaming business.

Disney is just the latest company to start mass layoffs, particularly at tech companies, with Amazon, Twitter, Microsoft, Meta and Google all laying off thousands of workers in recent months.

Disney reported better-than-expected earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2023 before announcing mass layoffs. For the quarter, the company’s revenue rose 8% from a year earlier to $23.512 billion, slightly above the $23.4 billion estimated by analysts polled by Refinitiv. Among them, the park, experience, and product business revenue was US$8.74 billion, a year-on-year increase of 21%

In the first quarter of fiscal 2023, the company earned $1.28 billion, compared with net income of $1.1 billion in the same period last year; adjusted EPS was $0.99, which was slightly lower than the $1.06 in the same period last year, but much better than the $0.78 USD expectations.

Disney+ had 161.8 million subscribers at the end of the first quarter, down 1% since October 1, 2022. Disney said Disney+ subscribers declined for the first time, but its profitability improved.

Bob Iger, Disney’s longtime CEO, recently returned to Disney after two years of retirement and debunked rumors that Apple would buy the company.

Disney abruptly fired former CEO Bob Chapek this month and reinstated Bob Iger. Disney wants the 71-year-old to lead the company for two years while it searches for a new CEO, Bob Iger, who previously led Disney for 20 years.

The returning CEO held his first town hall meeting with Disney employees today. During the meeting, Bob Iger reportedly addressed rumors that Apple and Disney could reach a merger agreement and operate as one company, and Bob Iger refuted all rumors to that effect during the company meeting. Bob Iger previously served on Apple’s board of directors for many years before exiting after Apple began competing with Disney in original video content.

While there are no media reports that Apple will buy Disney, certain analysts usually say that the situation makes sense.

Disney is a world away from the size of any company Apple has previously acquired. Apple’s most recent acquisition was Beats in 2014 for $3 billion, which included the foundation of Apple’s music subscription service.

As for Disney, Bob Iger called any discussion of Apple buying the company “pure speculation” at this point.

The man who acquired Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Fox for Disney during his last tenure as CEO also noted that Disney won’t be making any more big acquisitions in the near future, Deadline reports.
