DeLorean Alpha 5 EV has finally spanned its wings in its first revealed photos just a day before the car becomes available for the public. At one end, the car is honest and true to the design of the DeLorean of the 80s that gained popularity for its appearance in the classic movie series Back to the Future. It has those archetypal gull-wing doors that its predecessor flaunted. At the other end it much more than its forerunner. First thing, unlike was the trend in the 80s, the new Alpha 5 EV comes in an all-electric form.

The company that manufactured the original DeLorean cars shut shop in 1982. Not even in their dreams would the disheartened DeLorean fans have imagined that an unrelated company based out of Texas, which only dealt in supplying replacement parts of the vintage DeLorean car, would acquire the rights to the brand and offer it an electric resurrection 40 years down the line.

Alpha 5 gives away the angular look by adopting smoother curves. Also, unlike the old DeLorean it is a 4-seater instead of 2. For a car that sits this low and being 75 mm stouter than Tesla Model S, the fact that four adults can fit in only points at the ingenuity at design. In other dimensions, Alpha 5 is 25mm longer and 80mm wider than the Tesla model. The wheelbase is 360mm shorter in diameter as compared to Model S.

As one opens the doors the edges light up. Both front and back logos on the car are illuminated. There are two additional vertical lights on the rear. The front has highly streamlined headlights. The air-flow too is streamlined as the air vents direct the air over the bumper then smartly splitting it to the sides. Again, at the sides, the air from the front wheels is directed to the doors and pushed down just ahead of the rear wheels

As the gull-wing doors pop up with a restrained hiss of gas struts, one enters an interior that is unlike any other in the market. Let us not forget that no B-pillar comes in the way.

It seems in addition to having creative heads the car manufacturers have large ears to not miss out on what customers want. Unlike the efforts many EV manufacturers take in offering a futuristic look to their cars, those at DeLorean Motor Company did not give away with the traditional steering wheel. The company has offered a cool, flat-bottomed wheel that carries wider upper sections.

Also, the central screen packs into minimal space hardly eating up on the real estate offered inside the car. The console also has two cup holders and also there is some room left under the screen. With doors shut, the overall interior integrates with that of the dashboard. The sides resemble a shelf that runs across the dashboard. Add to this the low seating arrangement of the car, and you feel like seating inside a shell.

The rear passengers sit higher than the ones on the front. A tall tunnel runs between the seats for the entire length of the car. A single screen behind the steering wheel takes care of the driver’s instrument cluster.

DeLorean Alpha 5: performance specs

Aplha 5 packs a 100kWh battery that offers a 300 miles range and a max speed of 155mph. While these are features only for the base version there is no word as yet on any additional performance iterations.
