According to the Australian Fair Competition and Consumer Commission ACCC official website news, Dell Australia was sued for allegedly misleading consumers in terms of the price of add-on monitors.

The ACCC has filed federal court proceedings against Dell Australia Pty Limited (Dell Australia) for allegedly making false or misleading statements about the price of monitors that consumers may add to their Dell computer purchases, the announcement said.

It is alleged that from at least August 2019 through December 16, 2021, Dell Australia made false or misleading representations on its website about the price of the monitor and the potential savings when purchasing a monitor with a computer.

When a consumer selects a Dell desktop or laptop computer to purchase on Dell’s website, the consumer is offered the option to add a monitor during the checkout process. Typically, a line is drawn through the original price of the monitor, and then a discounted price is displayed. However, the ACCC says that most of the time, monitors are not sold at the “strikethrough” price, and in some cases, the displayed discounted price is more expensive than buying the monitor alone.

ACCC Commissioner Liza Carver said, “We allege that Dell Australia made false, misleading or deceptive representations on its website to induce consumers to add monitors to their computer purchases in order to display false or misleading discounts.”

The ACCC is seeking penalties, declarations, consumer redress, costs, and other orders.
