● Camaro model history

“First Generation Camaro”

The Chevrolet Camaro was born in 1966 and has gone through six generations of model evolution, becoming a popular representative work of muscle sports cars. The first-generation Camaro was based on GM’s F-Body rear-drive platform. It was GM’s first product to use an independent subframe to support the engine and use computers to adjust the suspension system. The first-generation Camaro continued to be produced until 1969, with a total of 699,538 units produced.

“Second Generation Camaro”

The second-generation Camaro was born in February 1970. This generation model was built on the same platform as the first-generation model, but the convertible version was cancelled. This is the only generation of Camaro that does not have a convertible version. In addition, with the introduction of more stringent emission regulations and the emergence of the energy crisis at that time, the maximum power of the engine gradually became smaller.

“Third Generation Camaro”

The third-generation Camaro was released in January 1982. This generation of Camaro resumed the application of large-displacement engines. The 5.7L V8 engine was installed on the third-generation model in 1987, and the convertible version also Returned the same year.

“Fourth Generation Camaro”

The fourth-generation Camaro was released in 1993. Based on the improved F-body platform, it maintained the basic elements that have continued from the first generation to this day: two-door 4-seat design, convertible or hardtop, rear-wheel drive, and innovative uses Fiberglass and polyester resin serve as the roof, trunk, doors and spoiler.

“Fifth Generation Camaro”

At the North American International Auto Show in January 2006, the fifth-generation Camaro concept car was officially released. It is based on General Motors’ full-size rear-wheel drive platform – the Zeta platform, and adopts a front multi-link independent suspension and a rear 4.5-link independent suspension. This generation of Camaro has entered the domestic market for the first time. The familiar Hornet comes from this generation of models. It is also from this generation of models that Chinese consumers began to know and love Camaro. In terms of power, only the entry-level 3.6-liter V6 version has been introduced in China, with a maximum power of 292 horsepower, and the transmission system is matched with a 6-speed automatic manual gearbox.

“Sixth Generation Camaro”

In May 2015, Chevrolet released the sixth-generation Camaro model, and this car also entered the domestic market. This generation of Camaro is derived from GM’s Alpha platform and uses a large number of lightweight materials. The body mass is reduced by 90kg compared to the old model, but the body rigidity is increased by 28%. However, only the 2.0T model has been introduced in China, with a maximum power of 275 horsepower and a peak torque of 400 Nm. The transmission system is matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

From the picture, the sidelines and outline of this new car are similar to the classic Chevrolet Camaro. Unlike most trams on the market, this car uses a mechanical door handle design instead of a hidden door handle. In addition, whether it is the rear wing or the sidelines of the new GM car, it is full of “muscle”. With red brake calipers, it looks full of power. There is a string of characters printed on the side of the body, which is expected to be related to the model of the new car.

It is worth mentioning that GM previously indicated that it plans to release an electric Chevrolet Camaro and an electric Cadillac Escalade. Among them, the electric version of the Escalade ESCALADE IQ has been officially unveiled recently and will be officially put into production next summer. If the electric version of the Camaro is launched in the near future, it is also expected.

At present, there are models on the Altetron platform in China (such as Buick E5, etc.), which have created favourable conditions for the launch of this two-door Coupe electric vehicle.

Camaro is a front-rear-drive coupe of Chevrolet. The series first went on sale on September 29, 1966, and the entire series has sold more than 5 million units so far.

CNBC reports that V6/V8 high-performance engine vehicles like the Chevrolet Camaro are a shrinking market segment as automakers transition to all-electric vehicles.

In 2015, Detroit automakers peaked at more than 394,000 sales of mainstream performance vehicles such as the Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro, Ford Mustang and Dodge muscle cars, according to industry researcher Edmunds. Sales of those cars have been declining since then, with sales of coupes like the Camaro and Mustang down nearly 50% from their peak through July 2022.

However, Chevrolet vice president Scott Bell also said: “While we will not announce a direct successor today, please rest assured that the Camaro’s story is not over.”

It is learned that the “Bumblebee” vehicle model in the 2007 movie “Transformers” was first described as a 1976 version of the Camaro, and later described as a fifth-generation concept car. The modified fifth-generation Camaro continued to play the role of “Bumblebee” in the sequels “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Dead” and “Transformers 3”.

To commemorate the end of Camaro production at the General Motors plant in Michigan, U.S., in January 2024, Chevrolet will release a “Collector’s Edition” package of 2024 Camaro models, including the high-end ZL1 model. More information on the Collector’s Edition will be announced at a later date, GM said. A GM spokesman declined to say whether it plans to use the Camaro name on the electric vehicle.
