Recently a self-published news that CATL second European factory in Hungary is stalled due to opposition from local residents. The person in charge of this CATL debunked the rumor, saying, “False, the Hungarian factory is proceeding according to plan and is not stalled.”

CATL announced in August 2022 that it would build a battery plant in Debrecen, eastern Hungary, and on September 5, 2022, a pre-acquisition agreement was officially signed. At the signing ceremony, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economy Sjáldor Peter said that this is one of the top five “greenfield investments” (new construction investments) in Europe in the past decade and the largest new construction investment project in Hungary’s history, which is of great significance to Hungary.

It is understood that CATL Hungarian plant covers 221 hectares in the industrial park in the south of Debrecen, and the first building will be broken in 2022. The total investment in the project is 7.34 billion euros (currently about 54.683 billion CNY), with a planned battery capacity of 100 gigawatt hours.

CATL has already built its first European factory in Germany and will start production in early January 2023. We chose Germany as our first investment target in Europe because we want to bring the world’s most advanced power battery technology to Germany,” said Zeng Yuqun, chairman of CATL. By establishing localized power battery supply capabilities in Europe, we can better meet the needs of our European customers and provide more timely and effective product solutions.”
