Apple today called on its suppliers to take new steps to address their greenhouse gas emissions and to take further steps toward decarbonization. In a press release, Apple said it will evaluate the work of its manufacturing partners and encourage them to decarbonize their Apple-related operations and use 100 percent renewable energy, with progress tracked and audited annually.

Apple will work specifically with suppliers who “work with a sense of urgency and make measurable progress in decarbonization” and encourage suppliers to address their greenhouse gas emissions outside of Apple’s products and provide them with a free suite of e-learning resources and on-site training courses through the Clean Energy Program.

Apple itself has been carbon neutral in its corporate operations since 2020, but its longer-term goal is to be carbon neutral across its global supply chain and throughout the life cycle of every product by 2030. Since 2015, Apple has reduced its emissions by 40%, primarily through energy efficiency, low carbon design, achieving carbon neutrality in its corporate operations, and transitioning its supply chain to renewable electricity.

More than 200 suppliers, which account for more than 70 per cent of Apple’s direct manufacturing spend, have committed to using clean energy sources such as wind or solar for all of Apple’s production, including Corning Incorporated, Nitto Denko, SK hynix, STMicroelectronics, TSMC and Yu Tung Technology.

Apple has also announced new initiatives designed to help decarbonise the global economy and promote new climate-focused solutions, including investments in large-scale solar and wind facilities in Europe, partnerships to support businesses in switching to clean energy, and advancing natural decarbonisation projects.
