Recently, foreign media reported that although BMW is undergoing an electrification transformation of its entire product line, it also has to balance the needs of Bimmers who love fuel power. Therefore, the upcoming BMW M3 will be available in fuel and pure electric versions.

It is reported that the BMW electric M3 and the fuel M3 will not share a platform. There are also reports that the BMW M4 will also become a pure electric version.

Foreign media reported that BMW may plan to use the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine of the current S58 series in the next generation of cars. This engine has a maximum power of 510 horsepower and a peak torque of 650 Nm. The transmission system will Matched with an 8-speed manual transmission.

Currently, the BMW brand is going all out for electrification. Judging from domestic data, in 2023, BMW brand pure electric vehicles will deliver nearly 100,000 vehicles throughout the year, becoming an important pillar of BMW’s overall sales growth, with a year-on-year increase of more than 138%. Among them, in November and December 2023, BMW’s pure electric model sales exceeded 10,000 units for two consecutive months.

But in the international market, some countries are currently relaxing their ban on fuel vehicles. For example, the European Union has relaxed its ban on internal combustion engines in 2035 and approved the use of synthetic fuels. At the same time, it also takes into account BMW users’ acceptance of rapid electrification transformation. BMW is also bound to balance the needs of more users, and then take into account the balanced development of fuel and electric vehicles.

BMW recently applied for the “iM3” trademark. This move triggered speculation that BMW will launch a high-performance electric vehicle that combines the electric “i” logo and the performance “M” logo. Car speculation. However, BMW M division chief Frank van Meel quickly clarified the rumors.

In an interview with Top Gear magazine, van Meel said BMW would “never” use both the “i” and “M” logos on the same car, saying: “Even for electric cars, we don’t The ‘i’ logo will not be used on M models.”

Van Meel also said: “If we do do something like this, it will always be named M without the ‘i’, because that is just a technical thing, and M stands for more than just technology, it is a Commitment, it’s about motorsport, it’s about emotion, it’s not about powertrains.”

It is noticed that BMW currently has four electric vehicles with the M logo – iX M60, i4 M50, i5 M60 and i7 M70. In addition, BMW is also launching field testing of a four-motor performance prototype in 2022 that looks exactly like the 3 Series. BMW’s Neue Klasse electric platform is therefore destined to spawn a performance electric car, it just won’t be called the iM3.

BMW executive Frank Weber hinted at the beginning of 2022 that the new M3 could switch to pure electric power, but this statement was clarified by Frank Van Meel, head of BMW’s M series. Frank Van Meel told Drive that he thinks pure electric power is a possibility for the next-gen M3 and M4, but only if they prove to be significantly better than their predecessors.

According to Frank Van Meel, each generation of M models has to outperform its predecessors. If BMW can meet the performance targets of the new M models using an all-electric powertrain, the next-generation M3 and M4 will be electrified. If not, will stick with gasoline power, but BMW is trying to make that happen purely electric.

Asked whether there would be multiple powertrain options, van Meel quickly dismissed the notion, saying BMW would prefer to use just one powertrain, meaning BMW’s next-generation M models won’t offer gasoline, electric, and hybrid-electric versions at the same time.

It is learned from BMW’s official website that the currently on-sale BMW M3 Thunder Edition is equipped with a high-performance 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine, which can provide a power output of 510 horsepower and 650 Nm. The top speed can reach 250 km/h, and the acceleration from 0-100 km/h is 3.9 seconds.

A YouTube video on the AutoTopNL channel showcases BMW’s M3 outperforming the company’s own performance claims on the car. The man seen in the video is the lucky owner of a G80 M3 that comes with the available six-speed manual transmission.

BMW M3 tweaks

BMW’s current claims on the M3 mention an optimum speed of 180 mph (290 km/h) with the top speed limiter removed or 155 mph (250 km/h) with the limiter staying intact. The owner of the car in the video does not have the Competition variant, however, has tweaked the ECU, exercised a decent number of performance modifications on his car and lately had the top speed limiter removed.

In addition to the ECU modification, the M3 seen in the video enjoys gains from 200-cell downpipes, a new catback exhaust and a carbon fiber air intake. These modifications have conferred it with a power of approximately 650 hp and torque under 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). This certainly is a massive upgrade over the standard 473hp and 405 lb-ft (550 Nm).

BMW M3 put to the test

Wanting to test his car, the guy drove his car on the German Autobahn. He was seen racing the car to a spectacular top speed of 317km/h, as seen on the speedometer. That translated to 197 mph on his GPS timing machine. The claim of close to 200 mph falls pale in the face of this extraordinary feat proving that the car has a lot more gunk in it than what the company believes.

The M3 modifications brought in enhancements not just in the optimum speed attained by the car. In-gear acceleration too has drastically improved as the car was seen sprinting from 100 km/h (62 mph) to 200 km/h (124 mph) in just 7.2 seconds in one of the tests at the Autobahn.
