BMW recently announced a voluntary recall of 14,086 electric vehicles in the iX, i4 and i7 series in the U.S. (2022-2023 models) because of a safety hazard in the battery control system. BMW says the faulty battery control system could accidentally interrupt the power supply, increasing the risk of a crash.

“Specifically, occasional false diagnostics may occur in the battery management electronics, which may cause the electronic control unit to reset. If a reset occurs, this may cause an electrical interruption,” BMW wrote in the recall.

The recall [PDF] and found that in the iX, i4 and i7 series, the specific models affected include the 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, i4 M50, and 2023 i7 xDrive60.

BMW stated that it has not found any traffic accidents caused by the failure of the battery control system, but BMW officials hope to reduce this potential risk through the recall. BMW discovered the problem following a review of internal systems after receiving about 10 reports from dealers and customers since June 2022.

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles by February 10, 2023. It notified dealers on December 20, 2022, with instructions on how to fix the problem. Customers can bring their cars to the store for free, and the dealership will reprogram the battery according to specific instructions provided by BMW.
