Haitong International analyst Jeff Pu said in a recently released research report that Apple will launch the first Apple Watch equipped with a microLED screen in the fall of 2025, and mass production is expected to begin in early 2026. .

Jeff Pu predicts that Apple Watch Ultra will be the first to upgrade the microLED screen, and plans to upgrade the Apple Vision Pro head display to upgrade micro-OLED to microLED material.

It was previously reported that market research firm TrendForce also believes that Apple is developing an Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with a next-generation microLED display. However, due to manufacturing issues, the release of the device has been delayed again, and may not be until It won’t be available until the first quarter of 2026.

The Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch is expected to be Apple’s first device to feature a microLED display. The current Apple Watch Ultra uses standard OLED technology, but microLED offers many of the benefits of OLED as well as some improvements.

MicroLEDs are more energy-efficient than LED displays and could significantly improve the battery life of Apple Watch Ultra smartwatches and other future devices using the technology.

And unlike OLED, microLED has almost no risk of screen burn-in, and microLED has a longer potential lifespan.

MicroLED displays also offer better contrast and faster response times because each pixel has its own individual light, and colors are more vivid and brighter. In short, microLED is a more advanced technology than OLED and miniLED.

According to Korean media The Elec, LG Display has recently purchased 14 Micro LED patents through the transfer of technology patents to prepare for next-generation screens such as the Apple Watch Ultra.

It was previously reported that market research firm Trend Force said in July this year that Apple is developing an Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with a next-generation micro LED display, but due to manufacturing problems, the device’s launch has been delayed again, and it may not be available until the first quarter of 2026 at the earliest.

In order to reduce its dependence on rival Samsung and strengthen its control over the supply of key components, Apple is actively investing in the mass production of next-generation displays.

Apple uses its mature supply chain to help promote the landing of micro LED panels. Suppliers such as Osram (ams-Osram) cooperate to develop micro LED components, LG provides substrates, and TSMC provides wafer chips.

LG Display has acquired 14 micro LED technologies through key technology transfers and other methods, so as to have greater influence in Apple’s process of improving the supply chain.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman broke the news, Apple will launch three new Apple Watch products this fall, including 41mm and 45mm Apple Watch S9 series and the second generation of Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple Watch S8

Of these, the Apple Watch S9 will get a “pretty big performance boost” with the upcoming S9 processor. While the update from the S7 to the S8 didn’t provide the performance boost that was hoped for, Mark Gurman insisted that it would be the first “significant speed improvement” since the Series 6.

Mark Gurman also shared small details about the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra, which has been tested in a dark titanium version on an engineering unit. While it was dropped because “designers didn’t like the look,” the option could still “theoretically” happen.

At its fall event last year, Apple officially unveiled the Apple Watch S8 lineup, as well as the first Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch, both powered by the S8 processor. The former is a regular upgrade to the Apple Watch, with a 41mm and 45mm dial in both aluminum and stainless steel, while the latter features a 49mm titanium case and a solid flat sapphire glass crystal with up to 2,000 nits of screen brightness, 100 meters of water resistance, and IP6X dust protection.

The Apple Watch Ultra, Apple’s high-end smartwatch, has a super-bright 2,000-nit display, twice the size of other Apple Watches, and a unique dial called Wayfinder that displays location coordinates and elevation data, taking advantage of the watch’s built-in dual-band GPS hardware.

Another special feature of the Wayfinder dial is the night mode. In night mode, the dial changes color to black and red, making it more suitable for viewing in dim light. Before watchOS 10, switching the night mode was done by rotating the digital crown. But in watchOS 10, the digital crown is used to activate a new widget area, so the night mode toggle is moved to the dial customization menu, which requires more steps to turn on.

watchOS 10 also brings a new improvement to the Apple WatchUltra, an automatic night mode, which determines whether night mode needs to be turned on based on the watch’s ambient light sensor.

That said, Night Mode currently only changes the color of the dial and does not affect the display of the widget area. If users view widgets in dim light, they may feel uncomfortable for their eyes. We hope that Apple will address this issue in a future system update to make the Apple Watch Ultra’s Night Mode even better.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in January this year that Apple will launch an Apple Watch Ultra with a MicroLED screen in 2024.

Ross Young, CEO of DSCC, a screen supply chain consulting company, previously believed that Apple would release the watch in 2025.

Although Ross Young’s revelations are usually more accurate from the perspective of the supply chain, there are still 1-2 years before the product release, and delays in design, component procurement, manufacturing, etc. may affect the release of this watch and on sale.

Analyst Jeff Pu said in a research note for Haitong International Securities that the new high-end Apple Watch could feature a larger 2.1-inch Micro-LED display, which would be larger than the current Apple Watch with an OLED display. The screen brightness will increase. The watch is likely to be a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra that Apple launched last September.

Ross Young, CEO of screen supply chain consulting firm DSCC, has said that Apple is expected to launch the Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with a MicroLED panel in 2025. Another source, DigiTimes, has reconfirmed this news from supply chain sources.

In a paid DigiTimes article, it was highlighted that Apple has been aggressively pushing MicroLED panel technology since it acquired California startup LuxVue in 2014. Given that microLED displays remain challenging to produce and more expensive to manufacture, Apple has chosen to be the first to deploy them on the Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch.

Foreign technology media MacRumors report the Apple MicroLED panel chip is the main supplier for Germany OSRAM (ams OSRAM), in addition to Epistar will start in 2026-2027, to provide part of the MicroLED chip.

Pu said that the new Apple Watch Ultra may be equipped with a larger 2.1-inch display, compared with the existing OLED display Apple Watch models, and microLED technology can improve the brightness.

Apple today announced results for its first fiscal quarter of 2023, which covers October, November and December of 2022. Despite a 5 percent decline in revenue compared to the same period last year, the company said a record number of people bought an Apple Watch for the first time in the first quarter of 2023.

Nearly two-thirds of customers who bought an Apple Watch in the last quarter were first-time buyers, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a conference call with investors. Apple introduced three new Apple Watch models last year: the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch Ultra, and the more affordable second-generation Apple Watch SE.

Despite that, Apple’s sales in the wearables, home and accessories categories fell 8 percent year-over-year in the fiscal first quarter. The company said the numbers were caused by a challenging macro environment and the category includes products like the Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod.

But there was some other good news for Apple, which also announced during an investor call that it had reached the milestone of 2 billion active devices, as well as record revenue from the services category.

Apple’s fiscal first-quarter revenue fell 5 percent year-over-year, Apple’s biggest quarterly revenue decline since 2016.

Apple has been granted a patent for an Apple Watch-related technology in a list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) on Thursday. The patent covers the creation of a magnetic induction charging and communication system in areas where network signals cannot be covered, such as underwater and underground, which could be equipped on the Apple Watch Ultra in the future.

In the patent description, Apple states that in certain environments, such as underwater environments, underground environments, high altitude environments, rural areas, etc., wireless electronic devices may not be able to connect to, for example, cellular networks and/or Internet networks. As a result, wireless electronic devices may not be able to communicate in such environments.

Apple believes it is necessary to provide communication in such environments. This Apple patent covers various examples of implementations that enable charging and communication via magnetic induction.

Apple describes an underwater environment in the first example. As with the Apple iPhone’s SOS satellite connection, underwater communication is accompanied by a series of predetermined messages, including but not limited to “Help!”, “Here! , “Ascent!”, “Down!”, “Shark!” or any other predetermined SMS message that will indicate the relevant information in the most effective way.

In this embodiment, using inductive charging and communication circuitry, the device can wirelessly communicate one or more messages (e.g., SMS, MMS) (e.g., low-frequency magnetic induction signals) to the underwater electronic device #66, which can then send information to the overwater electronic device #68.

In the second case, Figure 12 presented below illustrates that a large high-power magnetic field source coil antenna #86 can be placed on marine vessel #88 (e.g., a small boat or ship) and act as a surface communication beacon for divers who may be in the ocean.

From the first generation to the Series 4, Apple’s Apple Watch cannot always display the time like ordinary watches. Since Apple Watch Series 5, Apple has solved this problem by introducing related functions, which can display the time even when it is turned off.

There are three battery states for the Apple Watch before the battery runs out.

Turned on Apple Watch with all features

Apple Watch is turned off and has no functions

Apple Watch enters Power Reserve mode, which displays the time

Apple introduced the Apple Watch Ultra last September, which has only two battery states before the battery runs out.

Apple Watch on with all features

Apple Watch enters Power Reserve mode, which shows the time

That means users can’t actually turn off the Apple Watch Ultra, so the only way to really turn it off is to wait for the battery to run out. After you choose to turn it off manually, you can press and hold the digital crown to display the time just like other Apple Watch models in Power Reserve mode.

The only way to completely turn off Apple Watch Ultra today is to run out of power, which typically takes a few days. Even if the Apple Watch Ultra shuts down when the battery runs out, users will still be able to wake up and see the time for some time to come.

The Apple Watch Ultra is not the first Apple device to remain functional when turned off. iPhone can set aside enough battery to keep “Find My” on so it can be found if it is lost and turned off.

As we’ve been reminded, the Apple Watch can’t be completely turned off even after the watchOS 9 upgrade.
