The Apple Watch Series 3 was originally released in 2017 and until earlier this year was the lower-priced option in the Apple Watch lineup. But the longevity of the Apple Watch Series 3 sparked controversy, and the product was finally discontinued earlier this year.

But Apple is still selling the Apple Watch Series 3 with a stainless steel case for $369 in the Apple Refurbished Device Store, $230 less than the original price. But it’s clearly no longer available to consumers. Apple Watch Series 3 no longer receives software updates and has an outdated design, health features, performance, and poor battery life.

At $369 (about CNY 2,576), the refurbished Apple Watch Series 3 is more expensive than the updated Apple Watch SE 2, which starts at $249 (starting at CNY1,999 for China) and has considerably better and more advanced features.

In Apple’s refurbished stores, the company is indeed selling some more reasonable Apple Watch models, including specific configurations of Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch Series 7. With Christmas just around the corner, a refurbished product is also a good option if customers can’t order a brand-new product in time, or want to save some money.

According to earlier news from foreign media, Apple Apple Watch Series 3 is expected to be discontinued in September after the fall launch and will not be upgraded to run watchOS 9, while the next generation of Apple Watch operating system will be equipped with watchOS 9 after the fall launch.

The Apple Watch 3 is currently out of stock in three-quarters of the configurations listed on Apple’s website in the UK and Australia. On the U.S. Apple website, the 42mm white Apple Watch 3 is out of stock, while the other three Series 3 models are available for purchase.

The Chinese official website still has stock available for purchase, so if you have a desire to collect, you can still get your hands on it.

Apple Watch Series 3, a smartwatch released in 2017, is now the oldest device that supports watchOS 8 and is very outdated, both in terms of performance and design.

The watch body is thick and heavy, with large bezels and angles around the display and a built-in S3 chip that is significantly inferior in performance to the Apple Watch SE’s S5 chip and the Apple Watch Series 7’s S7 chip.

Following last year’s iOS 14.6 and watchOS 7.5 updates, Apple Watch Series 3 users will have to unpair and re-pair their devices from their linked iPhones when updating watchOS, as the Apple Watch does not have enough internal storage to do the update independently.

In other words, the Apple Watch Series 3 is already an “obsolete” device, and now the announcement of its discontinuation is a step towards inventory clearance.

Rumor has it that Apple will launch a higher-end Series 8 model named Apple Watch Pro and a second-generation Apple Watch SE at this year’s fall event, with a more uniform performance.

And the first-generation Apple Watch SE could replace the Series 3 as the new lowest-priced model. There are still 3 days to go before the fall launch, so we might as well look forward to it together.

Finally, the Apple Apple Watch Series 3 is sold out in some regions, with MacRumors reporting that the watch is out of stock in most versions in the U.K. and Australia, while it’s completely sold out in the U.S.

The media outlet previously said that the Apple Apple Watch Series 3 is expected to be discontinued in September and that the device will not be upgraded to run the latest version of watchOS 9 software, which means that potential customers should no longer buy the device.

The Apple Apple Watch Series 3 is still available for purchase on Apple’s official website in China.

Apple’s Apple Watch Series 3 was released in September 2017, almost five years ago. It is the oldest device to support watchOS 8, but its S3 chip lags significantly behind the Apple Watch SE’s S5 chip and the Apple Watch Series 7’s S7 chip in terms of performance. The Apple Watch Series 3 is also the only remaining Apple Watch with an older, thicker design, with large bezels and corners around the display.

Following last year’s iOS 14.6 and watchOS 7.5 updates, Apple Watch Series 3 users must unpair and re-pair their device from their linked iPhone when updating watchOS because the Apple Watch doesn’t have enough internal storage to do the update on its own.

In June, Apple previewed watchOS 9, the next-generation operating system for the Apple Watch, which is no longer supported on the Apple Watch Series 3, meaning the device will continue to run “watchOS 8. Nevertheless, the Apple Watch Series 3 is still available for sale. Apple is expected to discontinue the device when it announces a new Apple Watch model at its iPhone 14 / Pro launch event next month.

Those looking for an entry-level Apple Watch model can look forward to the Apple Watch SE 2. The Apple Watch SE debuted in 2020 and is a low-cost option for customers. Nearly two years since its launch, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, among others, expect the Apple Watch SE 2 to be released next month alongside the Apple Watch Series 8.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicts that the Apple Watch SE 2 could come with an S8 chip. The S8 chip will reportedly have the same specs as the S6 and S7 chips, which may explain why Apple can upgrade the Apple Watch SE 2 to its latest processor. In fact, since all of the chips that are newer than the Apple Watch SE processor are virtually identical, there’s no essential difference between the S6, S7, or S8 — all of which offer a modest performance boost over the S5 chip.

The new Apple Watch SE 2 may bring a few other features and improvements, and will better support the latest version of watchOS 9.
