The Asahi project was originally set up to port Linux to Apple Silicon Mac devices, and in a recent official update, it says there has been a breakthrough in extending USB and peripheral support.

The entire blog post details the current status of the Asahi project and the direction of future improvements, with a focus on significant breakthroughs in peripherals, USB-C and headphones.

At this stage, Asahi Linux only supports USB 2.0 on ThunderBolt ports, but the team says USB 3.0 support is coming soon. The subheading “USB3, Chapter 2×7 Gen3.1415” in the blog post hints that USB 3.1 support may be added.

Also, Ashai Linux has made a breakthrough in terms of Mac speaker support. The team is currently working on a security model so that there is no impact of corrupting the speakers during testing. At this stage the default though disables speakers, the team says there has been a breakthrough.

However, the headphone jack is now supported thanks to reverse engineering of the headphone codec used in newer Macs. Keyboard backlighting and adjusting display brightness are also supported in the new update.
