Apple’s “affordable” iPhone series may be about to make a comeback. It is reported that Apple is developing a new iPhone SE model, codenamed iPhone SE 4, and will bring major design changes. The technology website 91mobiles obtained a CAD rendering of the model.

It is noticed that previous iPhone SE models used the old iPhone design with a physical Home button, but this time Apple seems to be intending to make a change. According to CAD renderings provided by industry sources, it can be confirmed that the iPhone SE 4 will use a 6.1-inch display, which is a huge upgrade compared to the 4.7-inch screen of the iPhone SE 5G with a home button.

CAD renderings also show that iPhone SE 4 will adopt a notch screen design similar to the iPhone 13/14 series and be equipped with Face ID facial recognition function. As for the rear camera, this model continues the single-camera solution of the previous model.

The dimensions of the phone are 147.7 x 71.5 x 7.7mm, which is similar to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. This also corroborates a report from MacRumors last year, which mentioned that the iPhone SE 4 may come with a physical Action button (unconfirmed from the render) and a USB-C port.

The fourth-generation iPhone SE is expected to be released in 2025, but it may also be unveiled alongside the iPhone 16 series at Apple’s event this fall. While the iPhone 16 series is expected to be a relatively routine upgrade, the addition of an affordable model may help spur sales in developing countries.

According to the whistleblower “Unknownz21”, the fourth-generation iPhone SE will be equipped with the same style of multi-function operation buttons as the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as some other new features, such as the Type-C interface.

He called the iPhone SE 4 “actually a derivative of the iPhone 14,” echoing reports by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and others.

In his latest tweet (or X post), Unknownz21 provided some new details about Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone SE, reiterating that it will feature an iPhone 14-based design.

It is said that the machine will be equipped with a USB-C interface, which is also the first generation of iPhone SE to break away from the Lightning interface. It is also said to be equipped with Face ID technology, which also kills previous expectations that the iPhone SE may retain the Touch ID button.

The most interesting thing is that the whistleblower claims that the machine will be equipped with multi-function buttons like the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max / Ultra. According to various previous news, Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will not provide this configuration (Note: iPhone SE 4 may be released a year and a half later than the iPhone 15 series, and the iPhone 16 series is not sure whether to upgrade the series of buttons ).

In addition, the fourth-generation Apple iPhone SE will also retain a single rear camera configuration like the current model, that is, maintain the single-camera solution that everyone has often touted before.

It was reported earlier this week that domestic OLED panel makers such as Tianma are vying for orders for Apple’s iPhone SE 4 AMOLED panels, and Tianma has the opportunity to become a secondary supplier of the iPhone SE 4, which will be a major upgrade to the existing LCD models.

If nothing else, the next-generation iPhone SE will also be one of the first phones to feature Apple’s custom 5G modem, but numerous sources suggest it won’t be available until at least 2025.

According to the latest report released by UBI Research researcher Dae-Jeong Yoon, it is stated that Apple has delayed the mass production of the iPhone SE 4 to 2025.

Many sources, including Ming-Chi Kuo, Jeff Pu and Blayne Curtis, have previously said that Apple will launch the iPhone SE 4 in 2025.

Ming-Chi Kuo revealed in April this year that the next-generation iPhone SE 4 will use Apple’s self-developed 5G baseband, and will adopt a design similar to the standard iPhone 14.

Dae-Jeong Yoon said that the iPhone SE 4 with an OLED panel will be delayed by one year to 2025.

Samsung Display, LG Display and BOE are bidding to supply OLED panels for the iPhone SE 4.

The report also pointed out that in terms of OLED screen supply for the iPhone 15 series, Samsung Display is estimated to supply 110 million units and LG Display to supply 35 million units.

Note: UBI Research is a professional research and consulting company for the OLED industry chain in South Korea, established in 2003. Its business includes consulting, reports, market research and conferences.

Analyst Jeff Pu said yesterday that Apple plans to release the iPhone SE equipped with a self-developed custom-designed 5G baseband chip in 2025. TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo acknowledged the news in his latest tweet and shared more details.

Ming-Chi Kuo’s tweet is as follows:

Update on iPhone SE 4 Research and Predictions:

  1. I previously predicted that the iPhone SE 4 will be an extension of the iPhone 14. However, my latest investigation shows that this extended model may be an engineering sample machine, which is only for the technical and mass production verification of Apple’s self-developed 5G baseband chip, and there is currently no mass production and sales plan.
  2. I believe that the mass production schedule of Apple’s self-developed 5G baseband chip will largely depend on the test results of this engineering sample machine, so the mass production schedule may take until 2025 at the earliest, and if the test status is not as expected, The mass production schedule may even be delayed to 2026 or later.
  3. What kind of advanced process will be used for mass production of Apple’s self-developed 5G baseband chip depends on the mass production schedule.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said that after Apple restarted the development of the fourth-generation iPhone SE, the model is expected to be equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED display and a 5G baseband chip designed by Apple. He said that the chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process and will only support the Sub-6GHz frequency band, and will not support mmWave initially.

According to Korean media outlet The Elec, Apple’s partner BOE will provide OLED displays for the fourth-generation iPhone SE to be released next year.

Apple iPhone SE 4

According to the report, BOE was unable to meet initial orders for OLED panels for this year’s iPhone 15 series due to production issues (though the veracity of this news is questionable), with Samsung and LG receiving the bulk of the orders. Now BOE is trying to make up for that loss by focusing on OLED panel production for the low-cost iPhone SE 4. The number of OLED panels for the iPhone SE 4 next year is estimated to be around 20 million.

The fourth-generation iPhone SE is not expected to feature the new specs, but instead, use OLED stock originally intended for iPhone 13 in 2021 or iPhone 14 in 2022. “For entry-level products, it makes sense for Apple to use component inventory for optimization,” the report added.

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said last month that Apple has restarted development of the fourth-generation iPhone SE, which will come with a 6.1-inch OLED display and a 5G chip designed by Apple itself. Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14, which comes with a 6.1-inch OLED display and narrower bezels, while the current iPhone SE comes with a 4.7-inch LCD display and very wide bezels.

Following Ming-Chi Kuo’s report, noted display analyst Ross Young also said he had heard that the iPhone SE 4 would use an OLED panel from BOE, and today’s report reaffirms that information.

According to Jon Prosser, Apple’s iPhone SE 4 will feature an almost identical design to the iPhone XR, and he’s brought renders to show it off.

Jon Prosser says that Apple’s iPhone SE 4 will get the design from the 2018 iPhone XR. This change makes sense given that the initial iPhone SE design was based on the 2013 iPhone 5s, while the iPhone SE 2/3 design was based on the 2017 iPhone 8.

The latest information expands on Jon Prosser’s initial claims from August this year, but he’s still not clear on the device’s internals and specs – although some older hardware may be used to keep costs down. Third-party designer Ian Zelbo has created some renders that purport to accurately depict the new device.

The iPhone SE 4 was rumored before the iPhone SE 3 model launched earlier this year, and Jon Prosser’s latest claim is in line with display analyst Ross Young’s recent prediction that the next iPhone SE will feature a 6.1-inch display with a bangs “notch” at the top of the display. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first said that Apple was working on an iPhone SE with a 6.1-inch LCD display. The design of the next iPhone SE 4 seems to be largely consistent.
