A set of model spy photos showing the appearance of the iPhone 16 series were recently exposed online.

These leaked spy photos are definitely just mockups (via This means that the final iPhone 16 series may have some differences from the spy photos, but the overall design should be roughly consistent.

It is noticed that the first thing that may catch your eye is the new camera module design of iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, which looks like it is integrated with the camera of iPhone X (iPhone X uses a vertically arranged dual camera, located on the pill shape module) and the module design of the current iPhone 15 series. Regardless of whether it looks good or not, it will definitely bring a sense of freshness.

Another noteworthy detail is the iPhone 16 Pro Max on the far left, which is significantly larger than the other models. According to rumors, it will have a 6.9-inch display, which will be the largest Pro Max model ever. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display.

Apart from that, the spy photos don’t reveal much other information. It is expected that some models may add a new button (perhaps for camera control), but the spy photos of the model do not reflect this. Other upgrades could include new chipsets for the Pro series, some new AI features in iOS 18, and general spec bumps.

There are still a few months until the release of the iPhone 16 series (usually released in September), and there may be more spy photos leaked during this period, let us wait and see.

According to Taiwanese media “Economic Daily”, ASE Investment Holdings once again won a large order from Apple, and exclusively obtained Apple’s new design this year for both sides of the new iPhone 16 series, replacing the existing entities. Large order for capacitive button system-in-package (SiP) modules.

One of the highlights of this year’s new iPhone 16 series is the elimination of the physical volume buttons and power button on both sides of the fuselage, replacing them with capacitive touch buttons. In order to enhance the user experience, a second Taptic Engine motor will be added to provide vibration feedback when the user presses the keys, achieving the goal of disappearing the physical keys on the outside of the iPhone.

Apple wants to remove the physical buttons such as volume buttons and power buttons that have been used in the iPhone for many years. It requires at least two system-in-package modules to integrate capacitive buttons and Taptic Engine motors and other related components. Large orders for related system-in-package modules are made by ASE Investment Holdings won it exclusively.

In order to meet the needs of Apple’s new designs and new orders, ASE’s Kaohsiung factory is fully expanding its production and is expected to enter the phase of heavy shipments in the third quarter.

ASE Investment Holdings has a close relationship with Apple and has many years of supply experience. According to previous reports, Apple split its orders for advanced packaging and chip foundry, becoming the first major customer of ASE’s advanced packaging production capacity.

The latest industry chain related reports stated that United Microelectronics (UMC) has indirectly won a new order contract from Apple to produce key chips for the antenna modules of the upcoming iPhone 16 series. It is reported that the output will reach tens of thousands of pieces. .

It is learned from reports that the order received by UMC this time mainly comes from Apple’s power amplifier supplier Qorvo.

Verizon is primarily responsible for designing new iPhone antenna components for Apple, integrating new chips and providing Qorvo power amplifiers. The new chips use UMC’s 3DIC technology and are manufactured by UMC.

Verizon’s power amplifier products have previously been mainly looking for gallium arsenide foundries such as Wenmao. The reason for cooperating with UMC this time is because Verizon acquired Anokiwave Company (a wireless communication chip factory) at the beginning of this year. Verizon will acquire part of Anokiwave The order is outsourced to UMC, and the antenna products produced by both parties will be used in Apple’s new iPhone, and production is currently being gradually increased.

According to the Financial Times, in order to promote a diversified supply chain strategy, Apple has notified suppliers that it prefers to purchase batteries for the iPhone 16 series of phones from Indian factories.

TrendForce believes that given the critical factor in user safety of battery components, there is no room for error in the process of assembling batteries, and India’s existing assembly capabilities still need to be questioned. TrendForce believes that there are many uncertainties and certain risks for Apple’s battery production in India.

As the world’s most valuable company, Apple’s supply chain strategy has been a key factor in its success. In recent years, with the support of the Indian government, Apple has actively expanded the production capacity of its cooperative factories in India.

TrendForce takes the iPhone 15 as an example to analyze the manufacturing distribution in 2023. Foxconn dominates and India’s Tata Group only produces specific Plus models.

TrendForce believes that as the iPhone’s core processor and camera module are updated every year, battery upgrades are significantly slowed down due to safety concerns.

This delay is attributed to the critical importance of battery component safety. Considering the potential risk to user safety, even minor errors in battery components can cause significant damage to smartphone brands.

With that in mind, Apple’s manufacturing distribution for the iPhone 15 series suggests that Apple may not be entirely confident about India’s production.

It was previously reported that Apple encourages battery manufacturers including China’s Desai to build new factories in India. People familiar with the matter revealed that Xinpu Technology has been asked to expand production in India to meet future order needs.

According to foreign technology media MacRumors, all four iPhone 16 models launched by Apple next year will be equipped with operation buttons.

According to reports, Apple will begin designing and planning operation buttons internally as early as 2021. In Apple’s planning, it plans to launch touch-sensitive volume and power buttons simultaneously.

In the iPhone 16 series launched next year, Apple plans to change the operation buttons from mechanical buttons to capacitive buttons and expand to provide more functions.

Code-named “Atlas,” Apple’s internal project to improve action buttons will feature buttons similar to the Touch ID Home button on older iPhone models, or the Force Touch trackpad on newer MacBooks.

Disclosed internal documents show that the updated operation buttons will be equipped with “force sensors” that can achieve different interactive functions by detecting different pressures, but the specific changes are currently unclear.

The source also confirmed that the designs and prototypes of Apple’s basic iPhone 16 are equipped with operation buttons, indicating that next year’s entire series will be equipped with operation buttons as standard.

Apple has also experimented with different sized action buttons, with some prototypes having action buttons that are larger than those currently on the iPhone 15 Pro and closer in size to the volume buttons.

It is learned from reports that the iPhone SE 5 will also use an “operation” button, which will completely eliminate the silent pick from Apple’s iPhone product line.

One of the major changes in the iPhone 15 Pro model released by Apple this year is the removal of the mute pick and the use of an Action Button.

It was previously reported that Apple is developing the “Project Bongo” project internally, mainly to test the use of solid-state tactile volume/power buttons for iPhone Pro models.

Foreign technology media MacRumors recently disclosed Apple’s “Project Nova” project again, adding a “Capture Button” on the side of the fuselage. This word has related meanings in the Chinese context such as shooting, screenshots, and retention, but the actual function cannot be confirmed at present. Considered to be one of the selling points of the iPhone 16 series.

Sources say that after Apple plans to introduce the “Capture Button”, it will move the mmWave panel on the side of the US version of the iPhone to the other side and place it below the volume keys.

This location will be consistent with Apple’s discontinued iPhone 11 Smart Battery Case, which featured a dedicated camera button. However, the current operation button can open the camera application. In terms of user experience, placing the shutter button on the lower right side is more ideal than the upper left side.

According to multiple sources, Apple’s 2024 iPhone 16 Pro series will be equipped with a larger display. This was first claimed by display analyst Ross Young earlier this month, and a few days later Ming-Chi Kuo expressed a similar view, saying that the Pro models in Apple’s iPhone 16 series will have larger screens.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also said earlier, but there is no clear consensus on how much larger the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are than their predecessors. Gurman thinks the increase will be fairly small—”a few tenths of an inch diagonally”. (Note: Ross Young thinks it is 6.2 inches and 6.8 inches, while Guo Mingji thinks they will be larger, 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches)

Part of the reason for the larger screen is Apple’s desire to pack additional hardware into these phones, and Mark Gurman believes that Apple will bring a periscope zoom camera is a factor in this.

Now, according to Weibo blogger @Digital chat station, “Next year Apple (temporarily called the iPhone 16 series) will indeed increase the main screen size, especially the super-large Pro Max (Ultra). 1.14-inch super outsole and periscope telephoto, this is Apple’s imaging flagship.”

According to Taiwan’s Business Times, the 5G modem chip, which Apple has invested a lot of resources in developing, is expected to be introduced into the iPhone 16 series of phones next year ahead of schedule.

Apple iPhone 15 Series

The company’s supply chain is expected to introduce its own 5G modem chip to the iPhone 16 series as early as next year.

Taiwan media pointed out that supply chain vendors said Apple’s homemade 5G modem chip, codenamed Ibiza, will use TSMC’s 3nm process, and the supporting RF IC will use TSMC’s 7nm process, which is expected to be introduced into Apple’s iPhone 16 series phones in 2024.

According to this projection, TSMC will start trial production for Apple in the second half of this year at the earliest, and gradually increase the number of chips invested in the first half of next year.

In addition, Apple’s iPhone 14, which was launched in the second half of last year, is equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G modem chip X65, which is produced using Samsung’s 4nm process; the iPhone 15, which will be launched in the second half of this year, will be equipped with Qualcomm’s new generation 5G modem chip X70, which is expected to use TSMC’s 4nm process.

Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today that Apple’s new iPhone 16 series in the second half of 2024 may be equipped with only one (the highest-end model) with a periscopic lens, lower than the two expected by the market, lens upgrade demand is lower than expected by the market, unfavorable Dali Light and Jade Crystal Light.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, as previously predicted, the highest-end iPhone 15 series models (iPhone 15 Pro Max or 15 Ultra) will feature a periscopic lens in the second half of this year, and the market expects the periscopic lens to be adopted by more iPhone models, which will be key to driving demand for lens upgrades in 2023-2024.

A new survey by Ming-Chi Kuo points out that only one of the iPhone 16 series/top models may still be equipped with a periscopic lens in the second half of 2024, so the contribution of periscopic lenses to lens upgrade demand may be lower than the market consensus.

According to previous reports, Apple will use periscopic lens technology on the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max this year, likely due to hardware space constraints. Keeping the periscope lens exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro Max would break with Apple’s tradition of typically introducing new features as exclusive to one iPhone and then expanding to other iPhone models when the next generation of devices is released.

Currently, Apple competitors like Samsung already use periscope lens technology, and iPhone 15 Pro Max may support 6x optical zoom, an improvement over the 3x optical zoom currently available on iPhone 14 Pro models.
