The investment bank’s report shows that Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro series of smartphones, which was in tight supply in the fourth quarter of last year, has now also reached a supply-demand balance as foundry capacity has recovered and demand has changed seasonally. The investment bank based its conclusion that the iPhone 14 Pro series has reached supply-demand equilibrium on the basis of estimated shipping times for online purchases on Apple’s official website and the status of retail store pickups.

Phone 14 Pro series

The investment bank’s report shows that shipping times for iPhone 14 Pro Series online purchases have dropped to less than a week in the vast majority of markets worldwide, and have dropped to 5 days and under in major markets.

Specifically for major markets, in the U.S. market, the average shipping time for the four iPhone 14 models is four days, with all models available for pickup at retail stores and shipping times of about five days.

In the domestic market, the investment bank reports better conditions, with a 3-day shipping window and plenty of inventory available for retail store pickup. In the European market, the shipping time was reduced to about 3 days and most models were also available for in-store pickup.

For the iPhone 14 Pro series to reach a balance between supply and demand, the investment bank also clearly stated in the report that it was due to lower demand and improved supply. Demand starts to decline after the holiday shopping season, and while it will pick up briefly around the Lunar New Year, this gives Apple time to further balance supply and demand.

The main foundry of the iPhone 14 Pro series, which was affected by the epidemic, has not yet returned to normal levels, and the shipping time is longer than the same period in previous generations.

But the latest analyst tracking report shows that iPhone 14 Pro Series capacity has improved and shipments have shortened from the previous week.

The analyst report shows that in week 13 of the iPhone 14 series launch, the Pro Series has been shipped globally in 29 days, down from 35 days the week before, while iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have remained at 3 days.

The shortened shipping time for the iPhone 14 Pro Series worldwide also means that shipping times in key markets around the world have also improved significantly.

In the U.S., the Pro Series took 25 days to ship, down from 33 days the week before; in the domestic market, it took 39 days, down from 43 days; in Germany, it took 25 days, down from 32 days the week before; and in the U.K., it took 27 days, down from 33 days.

In the four major markets mentioned above, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have seen shorter and more consistent shipping times than the Pro Series, with the U.S. market remaining stable at 4 days, the domestic market shortening from 2 days to 1 day, and the German and U.K. markets shortening from 4 days to 3 days.

In the report, analysts said that iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus ship in roughly the same amount of time compared to the iPhone 13 series over the same period, but the Pro Series takes longer to ship.

While iPhone 14 Pro Series capacity has improved and shipping times have been shortened, analysts also said in the report that current shipping times are still longer than they were before the outbreak affected major factories and that challenges remain in reaching normal levels.

Apple and Foxconn will catch up with the production of the iPhone 14 Pro series in December, but will still face a reduction of 9 million iPhones, according to a forecast by U.S. investment bank Piper Sandler.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max

Foxconn’s main iPhone factory is already significantly behind in the production of the iPhone 14 series. Investment bank Piper Sandler said it continues to be “confident that Apple remains a strong brand” overall. But the investment bank cut its revenue estimates for Apple by $8 billion for the December holiday quarter.

“We are lowering our estimates for Apple, primarily due to supply chain concerns around Foxconn’s main iPhone plant, from which more than 50 percent of iPhone assemblies come, and where utilization could fall to 50 percent or below this November.”

Foxconn India is also producing some iPhones, but the investment bank analyst doesn’t think that matters. “In our view, India still accounts for less than 5% of total iPhone 14 production and may only help to a limited extent at this point.”

The investment bank predicts that Apple “will try to catch up with December production,” but that the company also “will prioritize production of the iPhone 14 Pro series over other models.

In addition, Piper Sandler conducted a survey of U.S. teens that included questions about their plans to buy an iPhone, and October 2022 data showed that 88 percent of teens plan to buy an iPhone.

Apple’s official website in China shows that the iPhone 14 Pro series is currently under the order, and the delivery date has been queued until January next year. The expected delivery time for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is 2022/12/27-2023/01/03, and users have been waiting for more than 1 month.

In addition, the supply of this series of models in physical stores is also not good. Apple retail stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao and other places all show that they are currently out of stock.

In stark contrast to the shortage of the iPhone 14 Pro series, the standard iPhone 14 /Plus models are in sufficient supply, and now you can receive the goods the next day after placing an order, and the retail stores are also in stock. Consumers are indeed not very interested in the iPhone 14/Plus models, after all, the improvement compared to the previous generation is not obvious.

In addition to the continued high demand, the decline in production capacity is also one of the major reasons for the serious shortage of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. At the end of October, due to the epidemic, the production capacity of Foxconn’s main iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max assembly plant in Zhengzhou was affected. According to analysts at market research firm Fubon Research, Foxconn is Apple’s largest iPhone contract manufacturer, producing 70 percent of the world’s iPhones.

On November 7, Apple’s official website announced that despite strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, shipments will be lower than previously expected, and users will take longer to get new phones. At the same time, Apple is also working closely with suppliers to restore normal production levels.

According to TrendForce, the production share of the two iPhone 14 Pro series has been increased from the initially planned 50% to 60%, and an upward adjustment to 65% is not ruled out in the future. Overall, the current share of new iPhone shipments in Apple remains at 36%, while the full-year iPhone shipment target for 2022 is 240 million units, up 2.8% year-on-year.

According to Tiburon Consulting, Apple’s production volume in the first quarter of 2023 is estimated to be revised down to 52 million units from the original 56 million units, a 14% year-on-year decline.

For the above results, Apple has actually made adjustments before. According to the supply chain, Apple has confirmed that it will cut orders for the iPhone 14 Plus model in a big way due to the overall market lull.

Industry insiders said that they have indeed received news that the iPhone 14 Plus will be drastically reduced in production, with the cut in orders reaching around 40%, and that other models will be used to make up for the shortfall in total shipments.

For this production cut, the supply chain said that Apple will not lose anything, but on the contrary will make a lot of money, because the demand for the Pro series is so strong that many foundries have shifted their production lines to the iPhone 14 Pro series.

With little or no major change in the total number of units, Apple is scaling back the production capacity of the 14 Plus to increase the 14 Pro series and thus gain more profit, which would be very helpful in increasing profits, after all, the latter is priced at around 10,000 yuan.

A person involved in Apple’s supply chain has revealed that Apple’s procurement team has re-evaluated demand for the Plus model and has asked at least one manufacturer to immediately stop producing parts for the iPhone 14 Plus. The person familiar with the matter also said that the two downstream suppliers responsible for assembling components for Apple have also cut production by 70 percent and 90 percent respectively.
