“Look at Pictures” is a smart recognition feature launched by Apple in iOS 15 and has been improved in iOS 16 and iOS 17. Users can pause the video at any frame or use the feature in photos to identify food in photos or videos and suggest related recipes, etc.

According to testing by foreign media 9To5Mac, Apple iOS 17 also covers the “picture query” function in automobiles, supporting taking photos to view warning signs on car dashboards.

As you can see from the picture, it can recognize multiple symbols and icons in the same picture and tell the user the meaning of these illuminated signs, thereby helping to diagnose faults faster.

Instructions on how to use the “View Image Query” function as follows:

Open a photo in full-screen view, or pause the video at any frame.

If the "Information" button displays a star-shaped symbol, it means that "View Image Query" is available.

Tap the star Info button, then tap Query at the top of the photo info to see the Photo Query results.

MacRumors editor Steve Moser recently tweeted on X (Twitter), stating that in addition to the “HEIF MAX” option, Apple has also introduced The “JPEG MAX” option has been added and will be rolled out to the iPhone 14 Pro model.

The tweet as follows:

In addition to the "HEIF Max" option for shooting 48-megapixel HEIF format photos, the iPhone 15 series also introduces a "JPEG Max" mode that can shoot 48-megapixel JPEG images, which can further improve compatibility. Additionally, the 48-megapixel ProRaw mode is now called “ProRaw Max.”

It is also worth noting that not all camera modes support the full 48 million pixels. Night scene mode, flash shooting, macro and other modes are still limited to 12 million pixels. This limitation arises because these modes require faster shutter speeds that higher-resolution sensors cannot provide.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max currently supports three camera options:

Regular 12 million pixels, supports saving in JPEG or HEIF format

 12-megapixel photos in ProRAW format

 48-megapixel photos in ProRAW format

According to Apple’s official changelog, since iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma start, “voice memo” will not only encrypt the recording itself, but also encrypt the title of the recording stored in iCloud.

After this adjustment takes effect, on devices with older versions of the software, Voice Memos may show the date of the recording instead of the previous title.

Apple’s official log content is as follows:

Starting with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, the titles of Voice Memos recordings stored in iCloud will also be encrypted.

As a result of this new encryption, when you update one of your Apple devices to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma, your other devices that haven’t yet been updated (and that have older versions of Voice Memos) may include the date and time of the recording (e.g., “2023-08-09”) as part of the encryption. “2023-08-11T07:53:31Z”) of a recording as the title, but not the title of the previous recording.

The new HEIF Max option has been introduced to the Camera app on iOS 17 RC models.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max currently supports three photo options

The options is as follows:

  • Regular 12-megapixel supports saving in JPEG or HEIF format
  • 12-megapixel photos in ProRAW format
  • 48-megapixel ProRAW-formatted photos

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro series certainly supports 48-megapixel photos, but it previously only supported the ProRAW format. This format outputs the original image and averages 75MB per photo.

Apple has therefore introduced the HEIF Max option in iOS 17, allowing users to take photos at 48 megapixels, which takes up an average of around 5MB per photo and offers more detail than the regular 12 megapixels.

Registered developers can update through “Settings” “Software Update” and “Beta Update”. Of course, you need to join the beta testing program first. Downloading and installing the beta version requires logging in to the Apple ID associated with the developer account.

Apple iOS

According to Apple’s release notes, the new version is mostly bug fixes, such as AirPlay not working on iPad Pro (10.5-inch) or iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (2nd generation), and some iPads with Lightning connector may experience interruptions in audio playback.

Right now Apple is mostly focused on making important optimizations and improvements to the system, but the latest beta still has some noteworthy changes.

  • Messages app: In the Messages app, you can now long press the “+” button to directly open the photo picker instead of tapping to select a photo option from a list.
  • Phone app: In a previous beta, Apple moved the red hang-up button in the Phone app from the bottom center of the interface to the bottom right. Since users have become accustomed to clicking in the middle, Apple had to restore the hang-up button to its original position.
  • Mood Tracking: Apple has further tweaked the animations in the Mood Tracking feature. The rings around each mood icon now spin faster and have an increased number of rings.
  • Photos app: When opening the Photos app for the first time, a new welcome screen will appear introducing new features.
  • Display & Brightness: In the Display & Brightness option in the Settings app, the wallpaper icon has been updated to the iOS 17 wallpaper.

According to foreign media 9to5mac reports, Apple iOS 17 will have a very convenient feature for electric vehicle owners: the built-in map app of the iPhone will display real-time information on the availability of charging facilities. In the iOS 17 Beta 1 version, the feature is still under development and “some necessary data is missing.”

It is said that the map of iOS 17 will first prompt electric car owners to set up their preferred charging network, and the options include Electrify America, Chargepoint, Tesla supercharging network and so on. Once a charging network is selected, the Maps app can provide users with real-time charging availability information, including the total number of spaces available and how many spaces are occupied at a particular charging station.

At the WWDC 2020 conference three years ago, Apple announced that it would provide an “electric vehicle routing system” for electric vehicles. The feature is available on Ford Mustang Mach-E models for the first time in nearly two years. After enabling this feature on the iPhone connected to the vehicle’s CarPlay, users can create new navigation routes and view the estimated remaining battery life of the vehicle on the phone after the trip. In addition, the Apple Maps app supports automatically adding stops at electric vehicle charging stations along the route.

Later this year, the Porsche Taycan model also received support for this feature. At present, the “real-time display of charging facility availability” function mentioned above is expected to only apply to models that support the “electric vehicle routing system”.

Apple is expected to launch the official version of iOS 17 in mid-to-late September, and iPhone XS and newer models can be updated for free. The update includes many new features, but it is noticed that not all of them will be available immediately, according to Apple’s website.

Below is a list of three features that Apple says are “coming later this year” as part of a future iOS 17 release, such as iOS 17.1 or iOS 17.2. Apple has been testing iOS 17.1 internally for several weeks, and the update could be released by the end of October.

Diary App: The new Diary app will allow iPhone users to review their day and memories, including text, photos, music, audio recordings and more. The app will provide personalized suggestions based on recent activity on the device.

Apple Music Collaborative Playlists: Apple Music’s new collaborative playlists feature will allow multiple people to add, reorder, and remove songs from shared playlists.

AirDrop transfers over the Internet: If you send content, such as a picture or video, to another user via AirDrop, the transfer will continue over an Internet connection when you leave AirDrop range, as long as both you and the recipient are signed in to iCloud.
