According to foreign technology media 9to5Mac report, Apple iPhone 14 Pro series models installed iOS 17 RC version update the camera app introduced a new “HEIF Max” option, allowing users to shoot 48-megapixel photos in HEIF format. The new HEIF Max option has been introduced to the Camera app on iOS 17 RC models.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max currently supports three photo options

The options is as follows:

  • Regular 12-megapixel supports saving in JPEG or HEIF format
  • 12-megapixel photos in ProRAW format
  • 48-megapixel ProRAW-formatted photos

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro series certainly supports 48-megapixel photos, but it previously only supported the ProRAW format. This format outputs the original image and averages 75MB per photo.

Apple has therefore introduced the HEIF Max option in iOS 17, allowing users to take photos at 48 megapixels, which takes up an average of around 5MB per photo and offers more detail than the regular 12 megapixels.

Apple today invited non-developers to test iOS / iPadOS 17 3rd public beta, 2 weeks after the last version of the update.

Apple’s official logs and media reports, and found that the internal version number of the 3rd public beta is the same as the Beta 5 released yesterday, both are 21A5303d, and the content is also identical.

iOS / iPadOS 17 3rd public beta content:

Live Wallpaper

Live Photo Wallpaper has returned, and when set, supported live photos will play when the screen is lit.

App Store English all caps changed to upper and lower case

Apple has updated the English descriptions of buttons on the App Store, and other App Store button icons, including “Get,” “Open,” and “Update,” have been capitalized. Get, Open, Update, and other App Store button icons have been changed to upper and lower case.
Live Voicemail

Live Voicemail lets callers wait for a while before connecting to talk to the owner.

Apple has modified the previous phrase “the person you’re calling may pick up” alert, with the latest description now reading:

Your current call has gone to voicemail. The person you’re calling is currently unavailable. After you hear the tone, you can leave a message for the owner, which will be recorded and told to the owner. After ending the message, you can hang up.

Mood Tracking

Apple continues to refine the mood recording feature in the Health app, constantly improving the user interface with a new graphic when entering the mood tracking screen.

Apple has also tweaked the details, using different graphics and colors to represent each emotion.

Fixed Private Browsing Mode

A new launch screen has been added to the Safari browser that allows users to turn on fixed private browsing. After installing iOS 17, this pops up when you first open a private browser window and gives you the option to enable the setting.

Turning on Locked Private Browsing locks the browser when you leave Safari or lock your phone, and then accessing Private Browsing requires authentication with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

Locating the Siri Remote

When users open the Remote app in Control Center, a new pop-up window appears that lets users track the Siri Remote that controls their Apple TV from their iPhones.

The feature has not yet been tested by MacRumors, a foreign tech media outlet.

Shortcuts

The icons Apple uses for Safari in the Shortcuts app have been improved to make each action more visible.

Apple used to use the Safari icon to show everything, but now options like searching the web, opening URLs, and filtering articles have more specific icons.

Messages Check In

Apple has improved the appearance of the Messages Check-In example screen to see the difference between sharing limited data and sharing full data. This settings screen now shows battery level and iPhone unlocks information, which is sent along with the location.

Apple has also updated the wording to make it clear that messages are only shared if there is no response to the Check-In when prompted.

Apple has announced that developer beta versions of iOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS Sonoma are now available to all users for free and can be installed without joining the Apple Developer Program. This initiative breaks years of practice in which only paid developers could access developer beta versions, greatly increasing user participation.

Apple officially announced the change on its developer website and compared the different permissions for the new free and paid members. With an Apple ID, users can access Xcode, software downloads, documentation, sample code, forums and feedback assistants, as well as test their apps on their devices. If a user does not have an Apple ID, they can also create one now. If they want to publish an app, they will need to join the Apple Developer Program.

The iOS 17 Developer Beta is currently available for all users in Settings > General > Software Update. Developer betas for systems such as watchOS 10 and macOS Sonoma can also be found and downloaded in the Settings of devices such as Apple Watch, MacBook Air, and Apple TV.

It should be noted that the developer beta itself may have some bugs and performance issues and is not suitable for installation on primary devices.

Starting with iOS 16.4 beta, the iPhone has a new “Beta Update” menu under General → Software Update in the Settings app. This menu will allow members of Apple’s Developer Program to enable the iOS Developer Beta directly on their iPhones, without the need to install the description file from Apple’s developer site.

The menu will only appear if the user’s iPhone is signed into the same Apple ID they used to enroll in the Apple Developer Program. Apple says that in future versions of iOS, this menu will be the only way to enable developer betas since provisioning profiles will no longer grant access.

The change will prevent iPhone owners who aren’t enrolled in Apple’s developer program, which costs $99 a year, from installing it for free when the iOS 17 developer beta is released at WWDC in June. Anyone can now easily install the iOS developer beta for free by downloading profiles from sites like BetaProfiles.dev.

Apple has cracked down on websites that share developer beta description files last year. BetaProfiles.com shut down in August to avoid a “legal battle with Apple,” and Apple’s lawyers also provided Twitter with a DMCA takedown notice for more than a dozen tweets containing links to IPSW.dev. BetaProfiles.dev is still running and appears to be a clone of BetaProfiles.com, but it’s unclear if that site has the same ownership.

iPhone owners who don’t want to pay $99 a year for Apple’s developer program will have to wait for the public beta of iOS 17, which will likely be released in July, and users can sign up for free in Apple’s public beta software program.

Users may still be able to install the iOS 17 developer beta for free using an IPSW (system firmware) file, but whether this is the case remains to be seen. Many years ago, Apple only allowed beta IPSW files to be installed on devices registered with an Apple developer account, and Apple may reintroduce this former policy.
