Apple today announced the latest iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 statistics. According to the existing news, Apple will announce iOS 17 at WWDC, so this should be the last data public before WWDC 23.

Apple says that 81% of active iPhones are currently running iOS 16, up from 72% in February. The data shows that 13% of active iPhones are still running iOS 15, and 6 percent are running older versions of iOS.

Apple also said that 71% of active iPads are now running iPadOS 16, up from 50% in February.

Around this time last year, 82% of Apple’s active iPhones were running iOS 15, so this figure is essentially the same as this time last year. It’s worth noting that iOS 16 adoption may be on the decline after Apple introduced the $99 per year iOS 17 Developer Program.

Apple has been testing a new, more modern hidden feature in iOS 16 that restricts functionality based on a user’s location, according to a report by external media outlet 9to5Mac.

Apple iOS

Apple currently uses hard-coded technology to restrict iOS features to specific locations, meaning that most restrictions are only associated with areas of the device, either through a software setting or a hardware source, the report said. But the company has been working on a new, smarter way to pinpoint a user’s location.

According to the press, a new system known internally as ‘countryd’ has been quietly added to iOS 16.2, but is not yet actively used. It combines a number of data such as the current GPS location, the country code from the Wi-Fi router and information from the SIM card to determine the user’s country/region.

Combining all this information makes it more difficult for the user to bypass these restrictions. At the same time, however, it will be easier for the device to automatically ignore these restrictions when the user travels to another region.

Back in December last year, Bloomberg reported that Apple had been planning to allow sideloading on iOS for the first time due to pressure from the EU. (sideloading is the installation of third-party apps via methods other than the official shop, the App Store)

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said that while Apple still plans to allow sideloading on iOS 17, the feature will not be available anywhere outside of Europe. With the new “countryd” system, Apple will be able to easily determine if the device is available in EU countries to allow sideloading.

Of course, if Apple is forced to allow sideloading in other countries/regions, a simple update to the system will enable the feature in other regions.

It’s not clear how or if Apple will announce sideloading as a new iOS feature. The company will release iOS 17 and other new versions of the operating system at WWDC 2023 in June.

Apple today announced statistics for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 install rates, the first time Apple has provided this data since the system update was introduced last year.

The data shows how many iPhones and iPads are running iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, as measured by devices transacted on the App Store on February 14. iOS 16 is compatible with iPhone 8 and newer models, while iPadOS 16 is compatible with all iPad Pro and some iPad Air, iPad mini and entry-level iPad models released since 2017. iPad mini and entry-level iPad models.

Apple’s website says iOS 16 is installed on 72 percent of iPhones and 81 percent of iPhones launched in the last four years. According to Apple, 20 percent of iPhones are still running iOS 15, while 8 percent of iPhones are running iOS 14 or earlier.

Adoption of iPadOS 16 is 50 percent overall and 53 percent across all iPad models introduced in the last four years, according to Apple. Adoption of iPadOS 15 remains fairly high at 35 percent across all compatible iPad models, while 13 percent are still running iPadOS 14 or earlier.

Apple shared the first iOS 15 install rate statistics in January 2022, while this iOS 16 data was released in February, so the timing difference does not allow for direct comparison. Broadly speaking, however, the adoption of iOS 16 is similar to that of iOS 15.

After its release in September, iOS 16 has been growing at a good rate in terms of installation rates, but it now appears that the system’s growth trend has slowed dramatically, especially throughout December.

According to Mixpanel, exactly 16 weeks after its release, iOS 16’s adoption rate finally reached 70% on January 1, 2023. And after iOS 16 adoption reached 66 percent in mid-November. In other words, it only grew by 4 percent in December.

Mixpanel’s data and found that iOS 16 installations spiked in the first few weeks after release, but that only brought adoption to about 40 percent of the total. a second spike occurred in mid-November, shortly after the release of iOS 16.1.1, which brought the total adoption rate to about 66 percent. The pace slowed down after that, and it took more than a month before iOS 16 installation rates rose from 66 percent to 70 percent.

As you can see, there are three phases of iOS 16 upgrades. One is the early upgraders, who want to update as soon as possible. The second stage is the more cautious users, who didn’t upgrade until after they had upgraded multiple versions to eliminate bugs. Then there is the final group of about 40% who don’t seem to care much about the new version of iOS.

One reason for the lack of excitement about upgrading to the new iOS, according to one analysis, is that iOS is already a relatively mature operating system that has all the features most iPhone users really need. iOS 16 brings some welcome improvements, but no particularly significant changes, so many users don’t feel the need to upgrade.

In addition, another reason users don’t upgrade iOS is Apple’s fault. iOS 16 currently has a number of bugs, and users are afraid that upgrading to the new system will affect their phone’s use. There are also many users who think that upgrading to the new system will slow down their phones, and while this is not necessarily true, there are indeed many users who think so.

The palera1n team launched a jailbreak tool for iOS 16 in the middle of this month. Jailbreaking removes software restrictions on iOS devices so that users can access and modify system files for various custom modifications and app sideloading, among other features. And now a developer has managed to exploit a vulnerability found in iOS 16 to change the default fonts on iOS without the need for a jailbreak.

Developer Zhuowei Zhang shared the GitHub project, which he calls a “proof-of-concept app,” on his Twitter account, saying that the app uses the CVE-2022-46689 vulnerability to override the default iOS fonts so that users can customize the system’s appearance using a font other than the default (San Francisco).

iOS 16.1.2 and earlier versions are affected by the CVE-2022-46689 vulnerability, which essentially allows apps to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. The vulnerability has been fixed in iOS 16.2, and the new version also fixes a number of other security vulnerabilities found in previous versions of iOS.

Because iOS has its own font format, developers experimented with only a few fonts, including DejaVu Sans Condensed, Serif, Mono, and Choco Cooky.

Zhang says the modifications are theoretically safe for everyone, so they will be undone after a device reboot. Nonetheless, the developers recommend that users make a backup before changing the default system fonts.

While the app created by Zhang does not require a jailbreak, installing it on an iPhone or iPad may not be as easy. This is because you will need to compile the Xcode project yourself or manually sign the IPA file with a developer certificate to install it on your device.

Apple released the iOS 16.1 update, the first major update to the iOS 16 operating system since its public release, as well as the iPadOS 16 release.

Both updates bring many features to Apple iPhone and iPad users, but according to Apple’s official instructions, there are still five features that will be delayed until the end of the year.

iPadOS 16: external display support
One of the signature features of Apple’s iPadOS 16 is Tabletop Scheduler, but Tabletop Scheduler support for external displays has been delayed until later in 2022. This feature supports resolutions up to 6K, allowing users to organize their workspace in an ideal way, running up to four apps each on iPad and the external display at the same time.

Play games together with SharePlay
SharePlay on Apple iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 will receive a new feature later this year that will enable users to use SharePlay to play games with friends and family over FaceTime.

This feature is available for games with Game Center integration and multiplayer support. In iOS 16 and iPad 16, Apple has extended SharePlay to be built into apps such as iMessage.

Infinity Notes
Apple will launch Freeform, a productivity app that allows users to write, draw, jot down inspiration or add anything they need, later this year. iPadOS and macOS.

SOS via satellite
Exclusive to Apple’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series, emergency SOS via satellite will be available in November, enabling users to make emergency SOS calls via satellite communications on iPhone. Emergency SOS via satellite will initially only be available in the US and Canada and will be free to users for the first two years, with pricing not yet announced thereafter.

Apple Music Classical
In August 2021, Apple acquired Primephonic, a streaming service focused on classical music, and in that announcement, Apple said it would release a dedicated Apple Music Classical app designed and tailored specifically for classical music in 2022.

When new versions of iOS are introduced, they inevitably bring with them some unforeseen bugs, and those bugs can lead to strange problems with third-party apps. iOS 16 is no exception. An analysis of user reviews in the weeks following the initial launch of iOS 16 found that social networking apps and dating apps were more likely to have issues on iPhones running Apple’s latest operating system.

iPhone 14 Plus

To understand which types of apps are experiencing the most problems with iOS 16, UnitQ applied artificial intelligence to thousands of reviews of 4,800 mobile apps on the App Store, which it compared to reviews posted before the launch of iOS 16.

It found that social networking apps saw a 42% increase in complaints about app quality issues, coming in first. Dating apps came in second, with user complaints about quality issues increasing by more than a third, and health and fitness apps came in third, with an increase of 21 percent.

Specific to the type of problem, users of social networking apps complained that they were unable to upload photos, up by 90 percent. Reports of Apple Pay not working in the shopping app likewise increased by 90 percent, and complaints of blank screens in games increased by 85 percent.

These problems are not all in consumer-facing software. Business and productivity apps saw a 73 percent increase in users not being able to sign into the app. This was a big problem with the new iPhone 14, and it’s a good thing Apple fixed the bug in iOS 16.0.1.

It’s important to note that these numbers are a percentage increase in complaints about specific issues in app reviews, not that 90 percent of iPhone shopping app users can’t use Apple Pay, just that the number of complaints about this issue has almost doubled compared to before iOS 16 was released.

This analysis doesn’t mean that iOS 16 has more bugs either; UnitQ did the same analysis shortly after the release of iOS 15 and found that the system had even more problems. For example, complaints about excessive buffering in social networking apps rose by 2900 percent, and complaints about missing download buttons in the Photos/Video app rose by 1633 percent.

These iOS 15 issues were eventually fixed, and that iOS 16 will be the same.

Apple iOS 16 was released to the public with a customizable lock screen, editable iMessages, improved focus mode and more. And in the coming months, iPhone and iPad users have even more new features to look forward to.

MacRumors has rounded up 10 new features coming to iPhone and iPad later this year. Many of these features are part of the iOS 16.1 Beta currently underway, but some are not expected until later this year.

iCloud Shared Photo Library
iCloud Shared Photo Library will make it easier for users to share photos with family or friends in the Photos app. The feature allows up to five people to add, edit or delete photos in a shared library accessible through iCloud.

Apple has delayed the launch of iCloud Shared Photo Library and now says it will be available later this year.

Real-time activity in third-party apps
iOS 16.1 will extend Live Activity to third-party apps in the App Store. This feature allows iPhone users to stay on top of real-time events, such as sports games or food delivery orders, on the lock screen or in Dynamic Island.

Live Events appears at the bottom of the lock screen on iPhone 13 and earlier models, as well as iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. On iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Live Activity appears in the Dynamic Island when the device is unlocked and on the Lock screen when the device is locked or in AOD display mode.

Once the iOS 16.1 release candidate is available, developers will be able to submit apps with live activity to the App Store.

The feature will also support specific sports leagues in the Apple TV app, including MLB games in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Korea, as well as the NBA and Premier League in the US and Canada only.

Emergency SOS via satellite
All four iPhone 14 Series models include the new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which will be available in the US and Canada in November.

Emergency SOS via Satellite is designed to allow iPhone 14 models to connect directly to a satellite, allowing users to send a text message to emergency services from outside the range of their phone and Wi-Fi. When launched in the US and Canada, the service was free for the first two years, suggesting that Apple may plan to charge for the service at some point in the future.

Apple says that a message can take 15 seconds to send via satellite in “ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon”, but that a message can take more than a minute to send “in trees with light or medium density foliage”.

Apple Music classical app
In August 2021, Apple announced the acquisition of the classical music service Primephonic, at which time it said it planned to launch a dedicated classical music app in 2022, combining Primephonic’s user interface with other features.

Apple continues to prepare for the launch of the Apple Music Classical app, but details and exact release date are still unknown.

Clean Energy Charging
iOS 16.1 includes a new Clean Energy Charging feature that Apple says is “designed to reduce the carbon footprint of iPhone by optimizing charging times when the grid is powered by clean energy”. This feature is only available in the US.

Apple Fitness + services without Apple Watch
Starting with iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1 and tvOS 16.1, iPhone users without an Apple Watch will be able to use Apple Fitness + services. However, without an Apple Watch, iPhone users will not be able to see real-time metrics such as heart rate and calories burned during workouts.

Launched in December 2020, Apple Fitness + has a library of over 3,000 workout and meditation videos, with new content added weekly. The subscription-based service is available in 21 countries through the Fitness app on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV and is priced at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year in the US.

Freeform
Apple said it will release Freeform, a new digital whiteboard app for iPhone and iPad, later this year. Described as a “flexible canvas”, the app will allow users to “view, share and collaborate in one place without worrying about layout and page size” and will fully support the Apple Pencil.

Freeform will allow users to start a session from FaceTime and see updates from others directly in the iMessage conversation thread.

Matter accessories in the Home app
The matter is an upcoming connectivity standard that will enable compatible smart home accessories to work seamlessly across multiple platforms, including Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Home. on iPhone, iPad and Mac, Apple says Matter support will be available in an update to the Home app later this year.

Controlling Matter accessories with the Home app and Siri requires HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD to run as a Home Hub.

More iPhone phones support the battery percentage icon
Apple has finally made battery percentage visible again in the status bar on the iPhone, no longer requiring a swipe down. This optional feature is being extended to iPhone 11, iPhone XR, iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini devices starting with iOS 16.1.

More iPad Pro support for front-of-stage scheduling
Apple recently announced that iPadOS 16.1 will extend front-of-the-counter scheduling to older iPad Pro models in the 2018 (A12X chip) and 2020 (A12Z chip) models.

Front Desk Scheduling will not support external displays on older iPad Pro models, and the feature limits the use of four apps to the built-in display. Apple has also delayed external display support for Front Desk Scheduling on iPad Pro and iPad Air models with the M1 chip and said the feature will be reimplemented in a software update later this year.

iOS 16 features a new auto-verify feature that automatically verifies a user’s device and Apple ID account in a private manner via iCloud, bypassing CAPTCHA prompts. The feature is designed to eliminate the act of proving that a user is a real person and not a robot by clicking on an image of a red light, for example.

According to MacRumors, automatic authentication is limited to sites and applications that support private access tokens, but adoption of the feature should receive a big boost from Cloudflare, which announced today that it will offer a free API called Turnstile for any site that wants to eliminate CAPTCHAs – even if it’s not a Cloudflare customer. – Even if the site is not a Cloudflare customer.

Cloudflare explained in a blog post how this technology works.

"Private access tokens are built directly into Turnstile. While Turnstile must look at some session data (such as headers, user agents, and browser characteristics) to authenticate users, private access tokens allow us to minimize data collection by asking Apple to authenticate the device for us. In addition, Turnstile never looks for cookies (such as login cookies) or uses cookies to collect or store any type of information."

Starting today, Turnstile is available for Beta testing via the Cloudflare dashboard or registration form.

Auto-verify is enabled by default on iPhones running iOS 16 and can be found under Settings – Apple ID – Passwords and Security – Auto-verify. Apple says the feature is also supported on iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura, which are still in Beta testing and will be released in October.

Apple released, in the latest beta version of iOS 16.1 Beta 3, a new switch option in the App Store settings that allows apps to automatically start downloading their in-app content after download and before the user first launches.

“Automatically run the app in the background to download content before launching it for the first time,” the toggle switch description says. With the new option enabled after a user installs an app from the App Store, it will automatically start running in the background to download its in-app content so that when the user opens the app for the first time, it’s ready to use right away.

A new toggle switch has been added in iOS 16.1 Beta 3 and macOS Ventura Beta 9. In addition, Apple has added a dynamic version of the Ventura marketing wallpaper in the latest macOS 13 Ventura beta. iOS 16.1 Beta 3 also sees changes such as satellite emergency debug messages and the removal of Matter accessories.
