After releasing the iOS 16.6.1 update on September 7, Apple stopped signature verification for iOS 16.6 today, meaning users who have already upgraded can no longer downgrade.

Apple usually stops signing older versions of iOS when a new version is released to encourage customers to keep the operating system up-to-date, so it’s not uncommon for iOS 16.6 updates to no longer be signed.

Apple focused on fixing two vulnerabilities used by the NSO Group group for its Pegasus monitoring software in its recent iOS 16.6.1 update.

Citizen Lab said in a blog post that the tracking numbers for these two vulnerabilities are CVE-2023-41064 and CVE-2023-41061, and that attackers used the above vulnerabilities to create images containing malicious code and distribute them via PassKit attachments.

Since iOS 17 is about to go live, it is not expected that iOS 16 will bring any new user-oriented features. It is worth mentioning that this version may be one of the last updates of iOS 16, and the follow-up will shift to security-focused updates.

In addition, Apple iOS 17 also removed support for iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. This means that these phones will usher in the final iOS 16 update, but in fact, Apple has still been releasing security updates to older hardware for years, so you don’t have to worry.

It should be noted that due to the configuration cache of Apple’s regional node servers, there may be a slight delay in the detection of upgrades in some places, usually within half an hour, not too long.

According to Apple’s release notes, the iOS 16.6 update is exactly the same as the previous RC version:
overview

The iOS & iPadOS 16.4 SDK provides support for developing iPhone and iPad apps running iOS & iPadOS 16.6 RC. The SDK is bundled with Xcode 14.3 and is available from the Mac App Store.
Home

Bugs fixed:

  • The first Matter accessory in a New Home family group failed to pair when selecting an accessory from the nearby accessories list to pair. (109905770)

Xcode

Known issues:

  • In iOS 16.6 and later, applying a negative value (NSBaselineOffsetAttributeName) to a UILabel’s attributedText for the full runtime returns to its pre-16.3 text position lowering behavior. (106109259)

Apple today iPhone and iPad users pushed the iOS / iPadOS 16.6 Developer Preview Beta 5 update (internal version number: 20G5070a), this update from the last release 12 days apart.

Apple iOS

Registered developers can opt in to the beta by opening the Settings app, jumping to “System Updates,” clicking on the “Beta Updates” option, and opening the iOS 16 Developer Beta. Note: An Apple ID associated with a developer account is required to download and install the beta.

There are an estimated 6 Beta updates for iOS / iPadOS 16.6, with the official version expected to be released this month.

This release is unlikely to include any new user interface features that are centralized in iOS 17, with the official release expected in September. In addition, iOS 17 will also no longer support the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, meaning that iOS 16 will be the last update for these phones.

However, Apple will continue to provide security updates for hardware running older versions of iOS for several years.

Apple has ramped up internal testing of iOS 16.6 over the past week, according to Macrumors, a reliable source said. This suggests that the first beta of the update will be rolled out to developers and public testers in the coming days.

It was previously reported that Apple had previously confirmed that iOS 16.5 would be available this week, so the first iOS 16.6 first beta could be available later this week or next week. Reports suggest that Apple has been testing iOS 16.6 internally since at least early April and that this could be the last version of iOS 16, as Apple is expected to release iOS 17 at WWDC next month and shift its development focus to this update.

Given the imminence of iOS 17, iOS 16.6 will likely be a smaller update, but it remains to be seen what new features, changes and bug fixes it will contain. Apple previously announced that iMessage contact key verification will be available in 2023, but it’s unclear exactly when this optional security setting will be available.

The official iOS 16.6 release should be available to the public in the weeks following WWDC, which begins June 5, and there is no indication yet that Apple is testing iOS 16.7.
