After releasing iOS 16.3 last week (Jan. 24), Apple today stopped validating iOS 16.2, the previously available version of iOS. This means that users who updated to iOS 16.3 can no longer downgrade to an earlier version of iOS.

iOS 16.3 introduces iCloud Advanced Data Protection, Apple ID security keys, and includes other enhancements, bug fixes, and security updates for iPhone.

Apple typically stops validating older versions of iOS a few weeks after it pushes out the official update. For some users who update to the latest iOS, downgrading can sometimes be very effective when they encounter major bugs. That’s why Apple waits a while before closing the verification channel for older versions of iOS.

The previous release of iOS 16.2 introduced the “Infinity Notes” app and also added Apple Music singing, lock screen improvements, and other features and bug fixes for the iPhone.

Apple introduced a more reliable and efficient new “Home” architecture in the recently released iOS 16.2 update. However, some users have stuck or lost their devices during the upgrade process. Apple said in a statement released today that it will soon launch a new patch to fix this problem.

Apple pointed out in a press release sent to foreign technology media 9to5Mac:

"We acknowledge an issue that may affect users' ability to share in the Home app. We'll roll out a fix as soon as possible. During this time, we have temporarily removed the option to upgrade to the new Home architecture. Users who have already upgraded will not be affected."

Issues reported by users in the past include: HomeKit devices stuck in an “updating” or “configuring” state, devices missing completely, invitations to share Home with other users failing, HomeKit Secure Video recording not working, and more.

Functions such as remote access to shared homes, notifications, automation, “HomeKit security video” and “adaptive lighting” in the new version of Home architecture require home hubs such as HomePod. The new “Home” framework does not support using iPad as a home hub. You can continue to use the Home app on your iPad to connect and control smart home accessories. Any connected devices that are not running the latest version of the software will not be able to access the upgraded home until updated.

Apple today stopped validating iOS 16.1.2 after releasing iOS 16.2 last week. This means that users who updated to iOS 16.2 can no longer downgrade to an earlier version of iOS.

iOS 16.2 introduces the “Wu Bian Ji” app, and also adds Apple Music singing, lock screen improvements, and other features and bug fixes to the iPhone.

Apple usually stops validating older versions of iOS within a few weeks of pushing an official update. For some users who have updated to the latest iOS system, when they encounter major bugs, the way of downgrading is sometimes very effective.

This is why Apple waits a while before closing the verification channel for older versions of iOS. The previously released iOS 16.1.2 improves the reliability of the car crash detection feature for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro users, improves compatibility with wireless carriers, and brings important security patches.

In the iOS 16.2 update released yesterday, Apple upgraded the underlying architecture of Apple Home, and Apple officially stated that it can improve HomeKit performance. However, the upgrade process was not smooth, and some HomeKit users reported that they were stuck after the upgrade.

The new Apple Home architecture is available to users of eligible devices after upgrading to iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS Ventura 13.1, watchOS 9.2, or tvOS 16.2. If there are multiple family members in Apple Home, they will all need to upgrade to the latest version or they will not be able to control their smart home products.

Apple officials say the entire upgrade process is very fast, taking only a few seconds to complete, after which a “Home Upgrade Complete” reminder will pop up. However, some users have given feedback that there are several problems in the upgrade.

One of the most popular problems is that users are stuck in the “Update” state, and the upgrade that can be completed in a few seconds can get stuck. Stephen Robles, co-host of the AppleInsider podcast, saw many of his accessories not responding after the update. He ended up manually re-adding any unresponsive products after hours of waiting for the problem to resolve itself.

Former AppleInsider executive editor Neil Hughes also reported issues with his setup, though it was probably much more confusing. One of his user accounts became unresponsive. He finally decided that the only way out was to delete the Home app and reinstall it.

Apple today pushed the iOS 16.2 RC update (internal version number: 20C65) to iPhone users, 50 days after the last release.

Today’s RC release brings opt-in end-to-end encryption to more iCloud features, which will be available to all U.S. users with the launch of iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2. iCloud’s Advanced Data Protection adds end-to-end encryption to iCloud Backup, Notes, Photos, iCloud Drive, and more. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, the only iCloud categories not covered by end-to-end encryption include iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendar.

iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 bring the Infinity Notes app for taking notes, sketching, drawing, brainstorming, creating mood boards, and more. Multiple people can work on the same Infinity Notes sketchpad, and all participants’ notes are synced in real time.

For iPad, iPadOS 16.2 brings external monitor support to the front-of-the-desk scheduling multitasking feature, allowing up to eight applications to be used simultaneously. External display support is available for M1 and M2 iPad models.

Apple has added a new Home app architecture to iOS and iPadOS 16.2 that Apple says is designed to bring faster, more reliable performance, especially in homes with lots of smart home accessories.

In iOS 16.2, unintentional emergency SOS calls can be reported to Apple, there’s a new sleep widget, live sports scores are back for the TV app, there are changes to the always-on display on the iPhone 14 Pro, and much, much more, with full details available in our iOS 16.2 feature guide. Apple’s full release notes for this update are as follows.

Infinity Notes

  • Infinity Notes is a new app for creative work with friends or colleagues on Mac, iPad and iPhone.
  • A flexible canvas lets you add files, images, stickers and more.

Drawing tools let you sketch anywhere on the canvas with your finger

  • A new way to sing along with millions of your favorite songs in Apple Music.
  • Fully adjustable vocals let you sing in pairs, solo, or in a mix with the original singer.
  • Newly enhanced beat-by-beat lyrics make it easier to keep up with the music

Advanced data protection for iCloud

-New options expand the total number of iCloud data categories protected with end-to-end encryption to 23 – including iCloud Backups, Notes, and Photos – protecting your information even in the event of a data breach in the cloud.

Lock screen

  • New settings allow you to hide your wallpaper or notifications when 24/7 display is enabled on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  • Sleep widget lets you view your recent sleep data
  • Medications widget lets you view reminders and quickly access your schedule

Game Center

  • SharePlay for multiplayer is supported in Game Center, so you can play with people who are on a FaceTime call.

Apple TV

  • The Live Events app for Apple TV lets you follow the live scores of your favorite teams on the lock screen or in the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Home

  • Improved reliability and efficiency of communication between your smart home accessories and Apple devices

This update also includes the following improvements and bug fixes.

  • Improved search in Messages so you can find photos based on their content, such as dogs, cars, people, or text
  • Turn off the Hide IP Address setting so that iCloud Private Relay users can temporarily disable the service in the Safari browser for specific websites
  • News articles in Weather display information related to the weather at that location
  • Participant cursors in Notes allow you to see real-time metrics as others make updates in Shared Notes
  • AirDrop now automatically reverts to contacts only after 10 minutes to prevent unwanted requests to receive content
  • Optimized crash detection for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models
  • Fixed an issue that caused some notes to fail to sync with iCloud after an update.

iOS 16.2 is expected to be released in mid-December.

Apple today pushed out the iOS / iPadOS 16.2 Developer Preview Beta 2 update, and according to evidence found by 9to5Mac in the beta, Apple is working on a new “Custom Accessibility Mode” for iOS. “

According to Apple, this mode offers a “customizable, efficient way to use your iPhone and iPad,” which should mean users will be able to change some settings to make iOS devices easier to use.

9to5Mac reports that with this new mode, users will be able to make settings to the user interface, such as using larger fonts and choosing which apps are displayed on the home screen. In the screenshots shared by the outlet, you can see how the mode enables things like larger app icons, a large back button, and a simpler user interface in the Messages app.

It’s not known when the mode will actually be available, and none of the current beta updates are available, indicating that the rollout of the feature is still a long way off.
