Apple today stopped validating iOS 16.1.2 after releasing iOS 16.2 last week. This means that users who updated to iOS 16.2 can no longer downgrade to an earlier version of iOS.

iOS 16.2 introduces the “Wu Bian Ji” app, and also adds Apple Music singing, lock screen improvements, and other features and bug fixes to the iPhone.

Apple usually stops validating older versions of iOS within a few weeks of pushing an official update. For some users who have updated to the latest iOS system, when they encounter major bugs, the way of downgrading is sometimes very effective.

This is why Apple waits a while before closing the verification channel for older versions of iOS. The previously released iOS 16.1.2 improves the reliability of the car crash detection feature for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro users, improves compatibility with wireless carriers, and brings important security patches.

Apple pushed the iOS 16.1.2 update (internal version number: 20B110) to iPhone users, 21 days after the last release.

Apple iOS

According to Apple, the update improves the reliability of crash detection for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro users, improves compatibility with wireless carriers, and brings important security patches.

The following are the full release notes for the update:

This update provides important security updates and the following enhancements for iPhone.

  • Improved compatibility with wireless carriers
  • Optimized crash detection for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models

With the crash detection feature, iPhone 14 models can automatically call emergency services when the phone detects a crash. However, a month ago, a few users complained that the feature was also triggered incorrectly when they rode a roller coaster. Apple later explained that the feature uses a gravity sensor combined with other data to detect crashes, but the company admitted that the system could be fooled on roller coasters.

It’s unclear exactly how Apple will improve the crash detection feature with iOS 16.1.2, but since the feature is based on algorithms that detect potential crashes, Apple may be tweaking the system to make those algorithms more accurate.

It’s worth noting that this update is only for the iPhone, so there’s no iPadOS 16.1.2 update for the iPad.

Apple’s next software update for iPhone users will be iOS 16.2, an update that is currently in beta and includes a number of new features and changes, such as Apple’s new Infinity Notes app, updates to the Home app and more, and is expected to be released in mid-December.

It should be noted that due to server configuration caching issues in Apple’s regional nodes, there may be a slight delay in detecting the update in some places, generally within half an hour, not too long.
