Apple has not officially released an update log for the firmware, and it’s unclear exactly what new features and functionality have been introduced. Apple added several new AirPods Pro 2 features in iOS 17, such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Volume, so there may be other improvements coming with these updates.

Users can’t manually update their AirPods to the new firmware version, it’s simply installed automatically when the AirPods are connected to an iPhone via Bluetooth.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously claimed that Apple would announce AirPods Pro headphones with USB-C ports at this conference and that other specifications wouldn’t change except for the port change, so it’s clear that Mark Gurman did bet on the content of the conference.

Previously equipped with Lighting interface AirPods Pro (second generation) headphones, driven by the H2 chip, compared with the previous generation of headphones, the active noise reduction and permeability mode has been upgraded to a certain extent, in the Apple China official website of the listed price of 1,899 yuan.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman said he believes Apple will eventually add a USB-C port to all of its AirPods lineup, but that the AirPods Pro will be the first headphones to come with a new charging case.

Mark Gurman had previously reported that Apple would release updated AirPods with a USB-C port charging case, and that the new iPhone 15 line of phones would also switch from Lightning to USB-C, but at the time he didn’t specify whether it would be the AirPods or the AirPods Pro.

It was previously reported that iOS 17 will bring some new features to the AirPods Pro, but software-based, while new hardware-based hearing aids will be introduced in the future. Mark Gurman also said he expects the price of the low-end AirPods to drop when the USB-C port becomes commonplace in other products.

Pillonel talked about the original purpose of the project, saying that it is to make modern consumers pay more attention to the issues of repairability and sustainability of electronic products.

Pillonel used a Formlabs Form 3+ printer to build the AirPods Pro charging case’s outer shell parts out of SLA resin, then cleaned them with IPA.

Pillonel also sanded the parts with 400-, 600-, 800-, and 1,000-grit sandpaper in sequence after securing them, and the parts were periodically submerged in water to aid in cleaning and progress assessment.

Pillonel applied a clear spray paint to the parts. The spray transforms the part from opaque to completely transparent, which achieves the desired transparent look.

Gurman also revealed that in addition to some of the AirPods features in iOS 17 that Apple announced at WWDC, Apple is also testing a new hearing test feature that will play different tones and sounds in the user’s ears and, based on the user’s response, will be able to detect possible hearing problems. The feature is intended to help users screen for hearing problems, much like the Apple Watch’s ECG app can detect heart problems.

Gurman said that in the long run, Apple also plans to add more health sensors to the AirPods hardware, such as measuring body temperature through the ear canal. Previously Apple announced that the AirPods Pro will get an adaptive audio feature later this year that can dynamically switch between transparent mode and noise-canceling mode based on the sounds of the environment.

In a video shared by iFixit, Pillonel again emphasized that while the Apple AirPods Pro charging case is easier to open than the AirPods, there is still no guarantee that the case can be opened without damaging the components.

After developing similar solutions for the first and second-generation AirPods, Pillonel sought to create a solution that would give new life to the unopenable AirPods Pro charging case.

Pillonel created a downloadable 3D printed replacement case (available on GitHub) to allow technicians to purposefully open the existing case to access the internals and make repairs.

Pillonel suggested that the USB-C on the AirPods Pro increases the likelihood of long-term repairability as a standard port, and similar phone port modifications Pillonel has done previously: including adding a USB-C port to the iPhone and a Lightning port to the Samsung Galaxy A51.

The Apple patent introduces smart glasses equipped with a screen that can be used to display computer-generated content. Waveguides provide computer-generated content to the user for viewing, while allowing the user to see the real world. The line of sight tracking systems (Gaze tracking systems) can monitor the user’s line of sight.

The headset’s display provides a left image and a right image to the left and right eye boxes. The left and right waveguides can be used to transmit the left and right images to the left and right eye boxes. The left waveguide and right waveguide may be transparent. This allows real-world images to be viewed from the left eye box through the left waveguide and from the right eye box through the right waveguide.

The reference associated with the left and right infrared light reflectors can be monitored using the left and right gaze tracking system cameras, allowing the cameras to be calibrated. The benchmark can be formed by the patterned portion of the infrared reflector or other benchmark structure.

Professional hearing aids are very complex, sophisticated devices that have features such as filtering unwanted frequency ranges and focusing on specific directions, thus allowing hearing-impaired users to hear other people’s conversations, surrounding sounds, etc. more clearly.

However, these specialized hearing aids are expensive, with a typical mid-range hearing aid typically costing several thousand dollars and a high-end hearing aid costing more than $10,000.

This also means that many people with hearing loss cannot afford the high cost of hearing aids. According to one survey, only one in six people under the age of 70 in the United States who need hearing aids have them.

Apple has long been interested in hearing aid capabilities. Back in 2013, the company’s MFi program was expanded to allow the iPhone to add functionality for Bluetooth hearing aids.

In 2018, iOS 12 added Live Listen, and Apple last year introduced Conversation Boost for AirPods Pro, which boosts the microphone pickup from directly in front of you to better communicate with others.

On Tuesday, a study published in the journal iScience found that the sound amplification in Apple’s AirPods Pro can help adults with mild to moderate hearing loss hear sounds with performance comparable to two professional prescription hearing aids.

The study noted that while the AirPods Pro does not meet FDA hearing aid standards, the device amplifies sound as well as other hearing aid devices. The study was not large, however, and objective testing found that the AirPods Pro met four out of five hearing aid standards.

In the sound and clarity tests used to evaluate the performance of some hearing aids, the AirPods Pro met established standards in four of the five categories, while the AirPods 2 met standards in two.

Ying-Hui Lai, the co-author of the study and associate professor of biomedical engineering at National Yang Ming University in Taiwan, China, said the AirPods Pro exceeded the ideal threshold for internal noise levels, which may make it more difficult for users to distinguish between lighter sounds and speech.
