According to @ mobile chip people, next year two iPhone 16 basic versions of the SoC used for A17, based on the N3E process, unlike the current iPhone 15 Pro series equipped with the A17 Pro chip used in the N3B process, its cost will be lower.

Sources at Revegnus and MacRumors have previously revealed something similar, that there are differences between Apple’s A17 Pro processor this year and the A17 version that will be launched next year: the former uses TSMC’s N3B process, while the latter uses the N3E process. Of course, Apple’s entire lineup of chips next year will be mass-produced based on the N3E process.

Compared to the A14, A15, and A16 chips, which are based on the 5nm process, Apple’s A17 Bionic is the first to use the 3nm manufacturing process.

According to the latest scores from Geekbench for Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the A17 Pro processor is clocked at 3770MHz-3777MHz, achieving single-core scores of 2999 and multi-core scores of 7779 and setting a new record. This is equivalent to a single-core enhancement of about 13.5%, multi-core enhancement of about 11%.

Apple officials learned that this generation of iPhone 15 series models are more used than the iPhone 14 series of larger battery, but the endurance time has not improved.

  • iPhone 15: 20 hours
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 26 hours
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 23 hours
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 29 hours

Apple, the big brother in the industry, obviously couldn’t accept TSMC’s price increase. After all, iPhone sales have declined. According to the blogger’s revelation, Apple rejected TSMC’s price increase due to poor iPhone sales. In Apple’s view, the cost of the new process and new technology is paid by itself, and the iPhone sales are not as good as expected, so it is too unreasonable to increase the price.

According to the blogger, Apple has officially rejected TSMC’s request for a price increase in 2023.

Of course, in addition to raising prices, TSMC also made Apple angry with its own new technology. According to the supply chain, TSMC has struggled with its 3nm chip production, forcing Apple to abandon its performance targets for its upcoming high-end iPhone SoC.

As the only 3nm customer of TSMC, Apple is still waiting for them to give a solution. After all, letting the A17 sacrifice performance is not the best choice, and it will also affect the cooperative relationship between the two companies.

If improvements can’t be made, the M3 SoC designed for future Macs could suffer the same setback, sacrificing performance.

In the eyes of industry insiders, Apple may sacrifice performance for the A17 Bionic and M3, and pay more attention to energy efficiency. Although they are still struggling, judging from the current efficiency of TSMC, it should be unlikely to change.

YouTuber @Max Tech shared the Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core running score data of the Apple A17 engineering machine.

Judging from its performance data, with the blessing of TSMC’s 3nm, the A17 not only has a higher energy consumption ratio, but also achieved a performance leap again.

Of course, according to the various information collected before, the A17 Bionic may only be applied to two high-end Pro series models, namely the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (or Ultra), and Because the cost has risen sharply, I am afraid that the price will increase again.

Judging from the running scores given by the whistleblower, this engineering machine has achieved a single-core score of 3986 points and a multi-core score of 8841 points, almost achieving the same performance as the MacBook.

For reference, the iPhone 14 Pro currently included in Geekbench has a single-core score of 2504 points and a multi-core score of 6314 points. In other words, if the news is true, it means that the next-generation A17 bionic chip will bring a 59.2% single-core performance improvement and a 40% multi-core performance improvement, which is terrifying.

According to previous reports, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro model is expected to use the A17 Bionic processor, Apple’s first iPhone chip based on TSMC’s first-generation 3nm process. Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, said that 3nm is 60% denser than 5nm), which can guarantee about 35% less power consumption while achieving the same performance.

Despite the higher manufacturing costs, it has been reported that Apple has secured all initial orders for TSMC’s first-generation 3nm technology. This also means that other smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung are willing to wait for the price to drop before adopting the process. With the global economic turmoil, it is expected that the Android market will face a severe situation in 2023.

Apple’s faster A17 chip will only be used in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, while the regular iPhone 15 and Plus versions will use the A16 chip previously used in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Existing intelligence shows that the iPhone 15 series models are expected to use the USB-C interface to replace the Lightning interface, and the Pro series models will also exclusively have the A17 bionic chip, Wi-Fi 6E support, solid-state volume and power buttons, enhanced LiDAR sensors, new Its periscope camera technology, ProMotion and all-weather display functions and so on.
