MSI did not release a new product at the end of last year when the AMD RX 7900 series debuted, which caused speculation that MSI was abandoning AMD graphics cards. Now, MSI finally showed the RX 7900 series Magic Dragon graphics card at CES 2023.

According to TechPowerUp, MSI’s graphics cards in this series are the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT Gaming Trio Classic, which use the Tri Frozr 2.0 cooling solution from the previous generation of cards (RX 6000 series and RTX 30 series), instead of the latest Tri Frozr 3.0 cooling solution introduced with the RTX 40 series. Tri Frozr 3.0 cooling solution was introduced with the RTX 40 series.

This cooling solution meets the cooling requirements of older flagship cards such as the RX 6950 XT or RTX 3090, and MSI probably thought it would also meet the cooling requirements of the RX 7900 series, so it did not use the latest cooling solution.

In addition, MSI’s RX 7900 series features a new custom-designed PCB with three 8-pin PCIe power connectors.

At this time, MSI has not yet announced the price and availability of the new RX 7900 series graphics cards.

The newest and most popular graphics card is the AMD RX 7000 series. Or Nvidia’s? The latest generation of AMD graphics cards issued today, inevitably, and Nvidia’s latest RTX 40 series graphics cards to do a comparison.

AMD’s newest generation of graphics cards, the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, were officially launched on November 4, with the RDNA 3 architecture, and the two front-runners being the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX.

AMD RX 7900 series

AMD’s two new graphics cards will go on sale on December 13 of this year, and it’s not the price that matters.

The original thought was that their national prices should be quite expensive, but surprisingly, the two new graphics cards did not increase in price, RX 7900 XTX is 7999 RMB, RX 7900 XT is RMB 7399, cheaper than the Nvidia RTX 4090 series and RTX 4080 series is quite a lot, while AMD’s previous generation flagship RX 6900XT national price of 7999 yuan. That is to say, Su Ma this time is to increase the amount or not increase the price.

So, in the end, what amount has been added?

What are the enhancements of the new generation?

The AMD RX6900 XT uses the RDNA 2 architecture, while the RX 7000 series graphics cards use the more advanced RDNA 3 architecture.

The RX 7000 series RDNA 3 architecture uses AMD’s small chip stacking design and is based on TSMC’s 5nm process, which can accommodate up to 58 billion groups of crystals. Its memory is made using a 6nm process and is equipped with up to 24GB of GDDR6 memory.

AMD RX 7900 XTX

Algorithm comparison: The RDNA 3 architecture can unleash 61TFLOPS of performance, while the RDNA 2 architecture can only play up to 23TFLOPS of performance. At the same time, graphics cards with the RDNA 3 architecture deliver 54% more performance per watt than the RDNA 2 architecture and bring up to a 2.7x increase in AI performance. The RX7000 series cards also have a significant boost in the media engine, supporting up to 480Hz refresh rate for 4K video output and 165Hz refresh rate for 8K video output with the greatly improved video quality.

The architecture-based improvements have proven to be very significant, as evidenced by the performance of the RX 7000 series when running games.

How does it perform when running games?

AMD has done real-world testing and found that the RX 7900 XTX graphics card runs “Apex Heroes” at 295 fps with 4K display on, which is extremely smooth. And when running Valiant, the fps was even higher at 704, thanks to the DisplayPort 2.1 output.

AMD RX 7900 Series Launch

However, this should not be the limit of the RX 7900 XTX, it will be able to output up to 8K ultra-wide ratio display screen if paired with Samsung’s upcoming 8K ultra-wide display Odyssey Neo G9, which will have better gaming effects. As of now, Asus, Acer, Dell, LG and other manufacturers will launch this kind of gaming screen that supports 8K display next year. And, Hyper-RX display technology will also be unveiled, which is designed to allow gamers to do single-click switching between refresh rate and low latency display modes.

AMD said that the RX 7000 series graphics cards support a 95fps frame rate and have FSR display technology, which can perfectly run “Assassin’s Dogma: Viking Age”, a masterpiece.

Notably, AMD also announced a partnership with Ubisoft to help optimize the performance of its Snowdrop engine. From this launch, the optimized Snowdrop engine is able to enable global ray tracing, light tracing shadows and other effects, while also maintaining a frame rate of over 80 at 4K resolution.

It has always been difficult for AMD’s graphics cards to match Nvidia’s in terms of adapting to games, and by working with some of the biggest game makers, AMD may be able to improve the situation with the latest RX 7000 series.

Can you beat the Nvidia RTX 4090?

The newest RX 7000 series of graphics cards from AMD should not be the rival of Nvidia’s RTX 4090 series. However, the same as the latest products below their respective, there is inevitably a comparison.

NVIDIA RTX 4090

In terms of computing power, the RX 7900 XTX is certainly no match for the RTX 4090. According to TPU’s website, the RX 7900 XTX “outperformed” the RTX 4090 in Cyberpunk 2077 4K and Metro: Departed 4K+ light tracing tests.

TPU website test

As you can see, even though the RX 7900 XTX doesn’t perform as well as the RTX 4090, the RX 7900 XTX is still very impressive in real-world performance. Of course, this is only the performance of the two cards in individual games. However, it also shows that the gap between the RX 7900 XTX and the RTX 4090 is not as big as you might think and can still be tough.

In the end

Overall, AMD’s RX 7900 series graphics cards are a big upgrade, and not like a toothpaste squeeze. Besides, these two new graphics cards are really more tempting in terms of price compared to Nvidia’s RTX 4090/4080 graphics cards. And with the price advantage in hand, the actual performance of the RX 7900 series does not pull away from the RTX 4090. Combining these two points, it is estimated that there will be many computer manufacturers looking at these two new graphics cards.
