AMD today officially released FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3 for short) intelligent sampling technology. The first batch of supported games are two games, namely “The Cursed Land” and “Legend of the Immortals”. . The biggest highlight of AMD FSR 3 is frame generation and the new Native AA quality mode.

Frame Generation

In terms of frame generation, AMD FSR 3 improves AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) optical flow technology and uses temporary game data such as motion vectors to generate “high-quality frames” according to the game. AMD officials said that this solution can increase FPS frames by up to rate 2 times.

AMD says it can achieve high frame rates on supported games even at the highest quality 4K resolution. This frame generation technology is compatible with all existing quality modes for AMD FSR, including Quality and Performance, resulting in the best combination of image quality and performance.

Native anti-aliasing

Native AA (Native Anti-Aliasing) quality mode can bring high-quality anti-aliasing and sharpening without upscaling, improving image quality.

Enabling this mode affects some performance, but can improve image quality and increase frame rates.

AMD today announced that FSR 3 will go live this fall, with the debut of Legend of the Immortals’ Forspoken.

In addition, AMD announced 10 more games that will support FSR 3 in the future, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth Goku.

AMD confirms FSR 3 support for the Radeon RX 7000, 6000, and older models, and recommends enabling it on the RX 6000 and newer. FSR 3 will also be supported on NVIDIA RTX 20+ graphics cards, recommended for RTX 30 and newer models.

A number of older cards such as the AMD RX 590 and NVIDIA GTX 10 series, shown below, also support some of the features of FSR 3 and do not support the latest frame generation features.

FSR 3 introduces frame generation to compete with NVIDIA’s DLSS3. As you can see in the image below, with FSR 3 on, Forspoken’s frame rate went from 4K 53fps to 4K 85fps.

AMD’s next-generation FidelityFX Super Resolution suite, FSR 3, was officially introduced at the Game Developers Conference GDC 2023. FSR 3 adds new frame interpolation technology to games and doubles performance.

AMD is bringing a similar feature to FSR 3, which AMD says generates interpolated frames via Motion Vectors and AMD Fluid Motion.

In terms of performance, AMD FSR 3 doubles the performance of FSR 2 at 4K resolution, and AMD showed a demo running Unreal Engine 5 with frame rates jumping from 60 FPS (FSR 2) to 112 FPS (FSR 3).

AMD said that games currently using FSR 2 integration will be very easy to migrate to FSR 3. FSR 3 will also be open source under the MIT license.

AMD has not announced an official release date for FSR 3, but it is expected to be available in the first half of 2023. According to the previous version strategy, FSR 3 frame inserts are also expected to be available for non-AMD graphics cards, so users with older Nvidia graphics cards can look forward to it.

Finally, AMD announced the FidelityFX SDK for game developers, which will be available in Q2 2023. The SDK comes with native backends for Vulkan and DirectX12, as well as a custom backend for AMD’s Cauldron.

AMD senior vice president and director of the graphics business unit Scott Heckleman revealed at the Radeon RX 7000 conference that FSR 3 is coming.

The engine is capable of leveraging AMD Unified Compute Engine technology and delivers outstanding ray tracing and rasterization performance with RDNA GPUs.

In the Unreal Engine 5 demo released by AMD, the Radeon RX 7000 GPU reached 60 frames per second under FSR 2.0, but with FSR 3.0 it can be directly improved to 112 frames per second. According to AMD, this new upgrade technology can increase its graphics performance by 2 times.

FSR 3.0 supports Fluid Motion Frame technology, a term coined by AMD, though the company doesn’t elaborate on what exactly that means. It does sound interesting though.

AMD confirmed that the technology will be available next year, but did not disclose any specific dates.

Additionally, AMD will be making major updates to its graphics drivers, such as a technology called Hyper-RX.

The HYPER-RX is said to deliver “one-click performance and latency improvements.” AMD claims that in games like Dying Light 2, it can improve performance by 85% while reducing latency to 1/3 the original, which sounds like a competitor to NVIDIA Reflex and DLSS technology.

According to AMD, HYPER-RX will be released in the first half of 2023.
