Amazon is one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, with hundreds of millions of consumers browsing and buying various items on its website every day. However, some media outlets recently discovered that some of the reviews for items on Amazon were actually written by artificial intelligence bots, which has left online shoppers shocked and disturbed.

According to US financial media CNBC, some reviews of Amazon items appear with the strange beginning “as an AI language model”, a response generated by ChatGPT, a common AI chatbot. These reviews often give simple and general descriptions of the item and do not reflect the real experience and feeling of using it.

Most of these reviews come from Amazon’s Vine program, which was launched in 2007 to “select the most insightful reviewers” to get free access to products and provide honest opinions. These reviewers are often labelled as “Amazon Vine Reviews” or “Voices of Vine”.

Fake reviews have been a big problem for Amazon and other online marketplaces, and many companies have used manual reviews and automated tools to combat them. Amazon has also sued a number of agencies offering fake review services and has called on social media platforms such as Meta to help get rid of fake reviews as they can be bought and sold in Facebook groups and Telegram chats.

Artificial intelligence bots such as ChatGPT may make it easier to create fake reviews. Third-party sellers on Amazon already use this tool to help write product listings and catchy titles, as well as marketing copy, some authors are even using ChatGPT to write e-books and publish them on Amazon’s Kindle shop.

For consumers, it is a challenge to identify genuine and fake reviews. In general, one can start by looking at the reviewer’s profile and history to see if they have a large number of similar or duplicate reviews; noting if there are excessive ad hominems or exaggerations in the reviews; comparing contradictions or inconsistencies between different reviews; and referring to other sources, such as professional media or authorities.

Amazon said they prohibit any form of review abuse, including offering incentives such as gift cards to write positive reviews. The company will suspend or ban the accounts of users who violate these policies. “We want Amazon customers to be able to shop with confidence knowing that the reviews they see are genuine and trustworthy.” A spokesperson said in a statement.
