Adobe for the Android version of the Lightroom mobile application added Ultra HDR image editing support. Ultra HDR is a new image format supported by Google’s latest Android 14 system, which allows our smartphones to take better-looking photos.

Importantly, Ultra HDR isn’t the bad kind of HDR, it uses a wider range of light and dark tones to represent an image – closer to what we see with our own eyes, appearing as brighter whites on the HDR display rather than the flatness that we usually associate with “HDR” photography. “Ultra HDR is how Android phones record and read HDR photos, and the files are in the standard JPEG format, so they’re also backwards compatible with SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) displays.

Adobe Lightroom added new HDR support in Android version 9.0.0, which is now available on Pixel 7, 7 Pro and 7A phones running Android 14. After turning on the option to import HDR photos in Settings, when importing an Ultra HDR image for editing, you’ll see a new HDR icon in the upper-right corner, and tapping on it will show you a histogram with additional HDR highlights visible. If you’re using a device that doesn’t support this feature, this part of the histogram will appear in red.

Viewing HDR images requires an HDR display in addition to apps that support HDR images, and apps like Instagram remove the metadata from images when users upload them, so you can only see SDR images. Currently, Adobe recommends exporting images to AVIF format, which is the format supported by Google Chrome.

Adobe recently introduced a new AI tool for Premiere Pro, which can change the video season in one sentence; and now it has also upgraded the Lightroom application, introducing many AI functions such as removing screen noise.

Adobe today upgraded the Lightroom ecosystem including Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, mobile and web Lightroom, allowing ordinary users to edit photos as easily as professionals and turn ideas into reality.

The main functions are as follows:
Denoise (Lightroom for Mac/Windows, Lightroom Classic, Adobe Camera Raw)

Denoise, an advanced artificial intelligence feature, removes digital noise from images, improving photo quality without losing detail. This is especially useful when working with high ISO files in low light. Currently, this feature is only available for RAW photos, and support for more image formats will be added in the future.

Curves in masking (Lightroom for Mac/Win, Lightroom Classic, ACR)

Users can use the curves in the mask to adjust the contrast, tone, and color of specific parts of the image, creating highly customized and precise edits.

Select People introduces additional AI Mask categories (Lightroom for Mac / Win, Lightroom Classic, ACR)

This feature automatically generates masks for portraits, making it easier for users to change the color of clothing and facial hair.

Polished Portrait (Lightroom for Mac/Win, Lightroom Classic, ACR, iOS, Android, Lightroom on Web)

Polished Portrait lets you quickly smooth the skin on portraits, enhance lighting, and refine facial features to achieve the look you want. Or use Darken Beard to darken a model’s facial hair in a photo for even greater effect. Meanwhile, Enhance Clothing increases contrast, saturation, and texture.

Make video black and white (Lightroom for Mac / Win, iOS, Lightroom on Web, Android coming soon)

Users only need to press a button to make the video get the exquisite black-and-white effect.
