Honda recently confirmed that its Honda and Acura brand electric vehicles sold in the North American market will use the NACS charging interface designed by Tesla. Honda relies on the impact of GM’s electric vehicle platform.

Honda would have been expected to announce the adoption of the NACS standard because it already has a lot of support, and General Motors has already announced that it will use NACS in its electric vehicles starting in 2025.

Given that the company’s two upcoming EVs for the North American market, the Prologue and the Acura ZDX, both use GM’s Ultium platform, the company has to follow suit.

It is noted that Honda executives confirmed the news in an interview with the Autoblog website. Noriya Kaihara, president and CEO of American Honda Motor Company, said: “This is very important. We must also promote the NACS standard. This is clear. Shinji Aoyama, executive vice president of Honda Motor Co., added: “We obviously rely on GM. Once they (shift to NACS), ZDX will follow.”

That means Honda will switch to the NACS standard in 2025, but the company has yet to strike a deal with Tesla to use Tesla’s Supercharger network or acquire adapters. However, judging by Jay Joseph, American Honda’s vice president of sustainability and business development, praising Tesla’s Supercharger maintenance, it appears that this is the company’s follow-up plan.

While having access to Tesla’s Supercharger network will help electric car buyers for Honda Corp., Honda is also one of seven auto giants announcing a partnership to build a new EV charging network in North America.

The “baby” of Honda and GM – the Acura ZDX pure electric vehicle was officially unveiled at the recently held Monterey Car Week. The car is produced based on the GM Autoneng platform and is available in two models, the regular version and the Type S performance version. It is expected to be mass-produced in 2024 and launched at the end of that year.

The car was unveiled as a concept car on August 19 last year. The sides of the body are very smooth, and the multi-layered front and closed front face are also quite sci-fi. After a lapse of one year, this time it is a model that is close to the mass production stage. Compared with the concept car, its design style is much more restrained. A traditional door handle was used. (The picture above shows the new car recently unveiled near the mass production stage, and the picture below shows the ZDX concept car unveiled in the same period last year. The interior part is the same)

In terms of interior, the car uses a combination of LCD instrumentation/11.3-inch central control screen and physical buttons. The center console is inclined to the driver’s side, with the latest Google user interface built-in, and the system is pre-installed with Google Assistant and Google Maps. Comparing the interior of this car with the interior of the concept car a year ago, we can find that the difference is much bigger than the appearance, just like a “seller’s show” and a “buyer’s show”.

In terms of configuration, the car supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto mobile phone interconnection, equipped with Bang&Olufsen audio, equipped with front and rear emergency braking, blind spot monitoring that supports steering assist, and rear pedestrian alert.

In terms of power, the car supports DC fast charging, which can increase the cruising range by 130 kilometers after charging for 10 minutes, and the battery pack capacity is 102kW h. Among them, the single-motor model has a maximum power of 340 horsepower and a comprehensive battery life of over 520km; the dual-motor Type S model has a total power of 500 horsepower and a cruising range of 460 kilometers.

In August this year, Acura launched the Precision EV concept car. The new car is the brother model of the Honda Prologue. In the future, it will be built on the platform of GM’s Autoneng, positioning it as a pure electric SUV. At the same time, the new car is also the brand. Its first pure electric vehicle.

Acura officially stated that the new car will be named ZDX and will be released and mass-produced in 2024. In addition, this model will also provide a sports version of the TYPE S in the future.

Existing media have photographed road test spy photos of the new car, which will feature slender head and tail lights and a huge front grille shape, very similar to the Chevrolet Trailblazer EV, and its windshield pillars and B-pillars, The C-pillar layout is very similar to the Lyriq, but the D-pillar is a unique design.

In terms of interior design, the new Acura ZDX looks likely to have a central control layout similar to the Honda Prologue. The only spy photos can find that the central floating touchscreen style is basically the same as the Honda Prologue, which may include 11.3 inches. The suspended central control screen and 11-inch LCD instrument panel.

Honda has already signed a cooperation agreement with GM, and will use the GM Ultium platform to build a new pure electric SUV, so the ZDX will be produced together with the Cadillac Lyriq SUV at the assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and it is expected to be used with Cadillac. The Lyriq is built with the same battery, electronic controls and electric drive technology.

The new Acura ZDX is expected to use a rear-mounted electric motor design, the base model can reach 340 horsepower, and there may be a 500-horsepower all-wheel drive version.
