In this 5G-A technology application, for the two typical scenarios of indoor multi-user multi-service concurrent viewing and outdoor vehicular mobility viewing, large bandwidth and high real-time service concurrent scenarios, such as Asian Games VR gaming (4K 60-frame), Asian Games VR live broadcasting (4K 60-frame), and naked-eye 3D video viewing (2.5K 60-frame), are realized, and the 20ms frame-level wireless transmission delay and 125ms frame-level wireless transmission delay are achieved in multi-user multi-service concurrent scenarios. It realizes 20 service frame-level wireless transmission delay and 125M frame-level guaranteed rate in multi-user and multi-service concurrent scenarios.

▲ After adopting 5G-A technology, the service frame-level delay converges to less than 20ms.

5G-A (5G-Advanced) is also commonly referred to as 5.5G, from the 3GPP Release 18 standard, the focus has gradually shifted from smartphone connectivity to communication to improve the performance of eMBB, popularize the XR and other immersive new services, meet the industry large-scale digitization, and realize the direction of the wisdom of all things connected.

MWC 2023 was held in Barcelona, Spain, from February 27 to March 2. At the summit “Moving into the 5.5G Era”, Yang Chaobin, senior vice president and president of ICT products and solutions at Huawei, said that 6G is still in the early research stage, so 5.5G is the next step in the evolution of 5G networks, and the industry is accelerating to form a consensus on this.

5G Network

According to the introduction, 5.5G has already started the standardization process, and will define 5.5G technical specifications through 3GPP Release18, Release19, and Release20, and continue to enrich the technical content of 5.5G, Release18 version will be frozen in 2024 H1; F5.5G has already landed the standard design from the industry initiative, ETSI The IETF and IEEE are also working on the first phase of Net5.5G standards such as SRv6, Wi-Fi 7 and 800GE, which will be fully released in 2024.

Yang Chaobin pointed out that spectrum resources are the cornerstone of wireless networks, and the 5.5G industry is working together to promote the Sub 100GHz spectrum towards NR: on the one hand, the current stock of spectrum will be integrated on demand through spectrum replanting and gradually move towards 5.5G; on the other hand, we will work together to promote the commercialization of millimeter wave and U6GHz ultra-large bandwidth spectrum to provide resource guarantee for 5.5G.

During this conference, GSMA led industry partners to form the 5.5G Community, WBBA (World Broadband Association) has been formally established in 2022 and released the Next Generation Broadband Roadmap white paper for F5.5G, OMDIA released the Net5.5G white paper in September last year, from The OMDIA released the Net5.5G white paper in September last year, aligning industry goals in terms of technology evolution, application scenarios, and industrial ecology to align industry rhythms and accelerate the commercialization process. In addition, 5.5G will achieve on-demand integration of existing resources in 5G networks through key technologies such as stock spectrum replowing and equipment multimode reuse, gradually evolving to 5.5G smoothly and fully protecting operators’ existing investments.

Huawei that Yang Chaobin said that with the joint efforts of the industry, 5.5G has made breakthroughs in many key technologies. Innovative technologies such as ultra-large-scale antenna array (ELAA) and virtual large carrier reconfiguration non-contiguous spectrum (MBSC) for wireless networks have been validated by multiple operators around the world, bringing 5.5G 10 Gigabit capability to reality. In the F5.5G fixed network, 50G PON has been standardized by ITU-T as the next generation PON, and key technologies such as symmetric uplink and downlink and multi-mode unification have been developed and matured, laying the foundation for smooth upgrade evolution from F5G to F5.5G. 5.5G / F5.5G development drives IP network upgrade and opens up Net5.5G. Net5.5G provides 800GE ultra-wide, end-to-end, IPv6+, intelligent, secure, time-sensitive, and time-sensitive IP networks. Net5.5G continues to enhance in 800GE ultra-wide, end-to-end IPv6+, intelligence, security, latency, etc., bringing new capabilities, products and opportunities for operators and stimulating their continued growth. Data shows that by the end of 2022, the number of global 5G subscribers will exceed 1 billion, the number of gigabit broadband subscribers will reach 100 million, and there will be more than 20,000 5G industry applications.

Huawei recently in the Philippines to take the lead in the commercial deployment of the third generation of 5G M-MIMO products MetaAAU.

Huawei said that as Huawei’s third-generation 5G RAN series, MetaAAU is a key path for the evolution to 5.5G networks by applying a series of wireless communication technologies “with the best performance and lowest energy consumption.”

According to the report, from the 3.5GHz MetaAAU opening effect in the Philippines, the user download rate and upload rate are increased by 35%. For the Philippines station spacing characteristics, the coverage radius extended by 30%, allowing more users to access the 5G network, and the average traffic increased by 37%.

Since the commercialization of 5G, the Philippines has built a 5G-oriented network based on medium-bandwidth and large bandwidth, providing a continuous 5G experience while meeting the growing demand for 4G capacity through the deployment of Massive MIMO products. After three years of network construction, the 5G network has completed coverage of 90% of the population in the NCR.

Huawei’s Total Connect Conference 2022 kicked off today in Bangkok, Thailand, where Huawei shared its core initiatives to advance the digital development of the industry and released more than 15 innovative cloud services for the global market. At the All Connect Conference, Huawei’s Chairman-in-Office, Hu Houkun, said that Huawei is now actively working with industry partners to advance 5.5G technology together, which is the next evolutionary direction of 5G, covering both fixed and wireless areas.

According to Hu Houkun, Huawei aims to greatly increase network capacity, ensure ubiquitous 10Gbps/s rates, and meet industry demand for reliable, low-latency connectivity.

It is understood that in 2020 Huawei proposes 5.5G, a continuous enhancement of 5G capabilities. On top of 5G’s high speed, low latency and large connectivity, new capabilities such as uplink ultra-broadband, broadband real-time interaction and convergence awareness have been added.

At the 8th IC&E Summit on September 8, Dr. Tong Wen, Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless, gave a presentation on the topic of Bridging 5G to 6G.

He introduced to the industry the drivers and plans for the evolution from 5G to 6G, pointing out that 5G continues to evolve and 5.5G is the necessary path for the evolution from 5G to 6G.

Dr. Tong pointed out that in order to meet the new demands for 5G from new toC services and toB industry applications, 5G will continue to innovate towards 5.5G, achieving continuous enhancement of eMBB/URLLC/mMTC capabilities, while adding revolutionary capabilities such as sensing, passive IoT, positioning and intelligence, and building “10Gbps downlink, 1Gbps uplink This will enable the construction of a 5.5G network with 10Gbps downlink, 1Gbps uplink, 100 billion connections and endogenous intelligence.
