Nintendo and studio Illumination’s “Super Mario Bros.” animated film has hit the $500 million box office milestone after just nine days in theatres worldwide, according to Variety. The film grossed $260.3 million domestically and $248.4 million internationally.

By comparison, 2019’s “Detective Pikachu” grossed $161 million worldwide in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, 2022’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations of all time, will gross $331 million, compared to the $319 million for the first film.
Sega also announced last year that “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” will be released in theaters in late 2024.
