STMicroelectronics officially announced the launch of the ultra-compact low-power IoT module ST87M01, which has NB-IoT data communication and GNSS geographic positioning functions. According to reports, this fully programmable industrial-grade module also integrates the advanced ST4SIM embedded SIM (eSIM) card. The company has begun sampling the ST87M01 to key customers worldwide.
NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) is an emerging technology in the field of the Internet of Things, which supports cellular data connections of low-power devices in wide area networks. This fully programmable industrial-grade module ST87M01 has obtained LTE Cat NB2 NB-IoT certification, covers global cellular mobile network communication frequency bands, and integrates advanced security features.
As the first IoT cellular mobile network access chip compliant with 3GPP Release 15, the ST87M01 has extended multi-region LTE network coverage. This highly-integrated native GNSS receiver features multiple navigation satellite system connectivity for more robust and accurate positioning while improving power savings while NB-IoT is asleep.
The ST87M01 module is housed in a 10.6mm x 12.8mm LGA package. Qualified over the industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), low-power mode operating current is less than 2µA, and maximum transmit output power reaches +23dBm, making it suitable for a variety of applications requiring reliable low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) connectivity IoT devices, including smart meters, smart grids, smart buildings, smart cities and smart infrastructure, as well as industrial condition monitoring and factory automation, smart agriculture and environmental monitoring, also applies to pets, children, elderly tracking and positioning, remote worker safety Monitoring, equipment asset tracking such as power tools, and general intelligent logistics.
ST87M01 is a fully programmable IoT platform that brings design flexibility to product developers, and users only need to embed their own code directly into the module to realize simple application scenarios. The module can also be paired with a separate host microcontroller to enable many more complex use cases. To help developers design for popular IoT use cases, ST offers a variety of protocol stacks, including IPv6, TCP/UDP, CoAP/LWM2M, MQTT, HTTP/HTTPS, and TLS/DTLS. In addition, the ST87M01 supports standardized 3GPP AT commands, as well as STMicroelectronics’ enhanced AT commands.
The module also integrates a ST4SIM-embedded SIM (eSIM) card. The eSIM is certified to the latest industry standards, such as the recent GSMA eSA (Security Assurance) certification, further reducing device size and increasing security. The module also includes an advanced Embedded Security Element (eSE).
The ST87M01 works with a wide range of STMicroelectronics technology products, including microcontrollers, AI solutions, sensors, actuators, PMUs, converters, interfaces, memories, and other connectivity technologies.
