Stellantis Group and the United States startup Ample signed an agreement to cooperate in electric vehicle (EV) battery charging technology, which can replace a fully charged battery in less than five minutes.
The two parties have agreed to integrate Ample’s modular battery swap solution into Stellantis EVs, where the battery swap technology will allow owners to stop by a battery swap station for a few minutes to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one (also known as a power swap).
The two companies are also discussing expanding the use of Ample’s modular battery swap technology to meet the needs of other Stellantis platforms and regions.
Initial plans call for a 2024 launch in Madrid, Spain, using a fleet of 100 Fiat 500e vehicles from Stellantis’ Free2move car-sharing service (the Fiat 500e is Stellantis’ top-selling electric vehicle).
In addition, Ample’s lightweight battery swap stations can be deployed in public areas within three days, enabling a rapidly expanding infrastructure to meet the needs of vehicle owners. When an Ample-enabled EV approaches an Ample station, the station immediately recognizes the vehicle. Once parked, the driver can initiate a battery swap via an app, resulting in a power swap in less than five minutes.
