Yesterday, V Society released a new update for SteamDeck’s operating system SteamOS, upgrading its version to SteamOS 3.3. The update is detailed in the patch notes and includes some new features and many bug fixes.
V added a feature that alerts you when the Steam Deck is too hot or too cold, and V has previously stated that 0-35°C is the optimal temperature to run the handheld, beyond which the device will automatically downgrade its performance to ensure normal use.
V also said that the Steam Deck is equipped with a custom quad-core AMD APU (codenamed Aerith) that will not fail but will slow down when running at temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius, but the Steam Deck processor will automatically shut down once it exceeds 105 degrees Celsius to avoid damage to the device.
Steam Deck designer Lawrence Yang added: “Like any battery-powered device, the Steam Deck’s battery cannot sustain peak power consumption at temperatures below 0°C. If the temperature does drop that low, we will begin to downconvert to ensure battery life.”
The new version also adds a new night mode timer-on feature, which allows you to select the time at which the handheld automatically turns on night mode. Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese keyboard support has also been added. When in docked mode, it will be able to scale the Steam Deck user interface for external monitors and also switch to auto-scaling.
The Steam Deck has faced an oversupply since its release, but on Saturday Valve said that players will receive the Steam Deck earlier than previously expected as the supply chain shortage for the Steam Deck has been alleviated and Valve will continue to expand production. The Steam Deck will be available this year, and many orders that were previously expected to be received in “Q4 or later” have now been moved up to “Q3”.
