South Korea’s ICT exports fall for 10th straight month, share to China drops to 40%

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communications stated on the 15th that South Korea’s April Information and communication technology (ICT) exports decreased by 35.9% year-on-year to 12.77 billion US dollars, this is the 10th consecutive month that South Korea’s ICT exports have shown a downward trend.

It is said that South Korea’s semiconductor exports in April decreased by 40.5% year-on-year to 6.48 billion US dollars which is due to the negative factors of weakening demand for ICT equipment and falling unit prices of memory chips. Among them, South Korea’s export of memory chips decreased (54.1%) more than that of system chips (22.1%).

During the same period, South Korea’s exports of monitors fell by 30.5 percent, phones by 41.6 percent, computers and peripherals by 66.7 percent, and communications equipment by 14.7 percent. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the unit price of DRAM per 8GB was US$3.35 in May and June last year, and dropped to US$1.45 last month.

In terms of displays, South Korea’s exports amounted to US$1.43 billion (currently about 9.953 billion yuan), OLEDs fell by 21.6%, LCDs fell by 43.9%, affected by shrinking domestic production, while phones in finished products and parts decreased by 42.3% and 43.9% respectively. 41.2%.

The export value of communication equipment was 200 million U.S. dollars a decrease of 14.7%, of which India’s exports, which accounted for 20,000 U.S. dollars, soared 380.5%. This is the impact of a substantial increase in equipment imports due to the expansion of 5G communication infrastructure.

Judging from the status quo of exports, China (including Hong Kong) accounted for 40% of South Korea’s ICT exports, with exports reaching US$5.1 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 39.0%. The Ministry of Science and Technology noted that the share of South Korea’s exports to China had fallen from 42.1 percent in November last year to 40.0 percent last month.

In addition to China, ICT exports from other major regions also declined, with Vietnam accounting for 26.7%, the United States at 40.1%, the European Union at 36.8%, and Japan at 25.1%. However, with the recent increase in demand for flagship phones, U.S. phone exports surged 126.9%, and exports of rechargeable batteries to the United States also increased by 3.9% to $ 2.25 billion.
