Sources in the supply chain have told Gizmo that Sony’s OLED on Silicon has passed Apple’s testing and certification, and has increased equipment procurement to expand production capacity and ensure demand for Apple’s OLED on Silicon orders. According to a recent report released by Korean securities firm NH Investment & Securities, Apple’s MR devices will be equipped with 3000PPI silicon-based OLED (OLED on Silicon), which will start mass production around November and debut in the first quarter of next year.
However, Sony is currently the main supplier, if not the only supplier, of OLED on Silicon for Apple’s first MR device, as it is able to meet the demand for OLED on Silicon, followed by LG Display.
According to supply chain sources, Sony’s silicon-based OLEDs for Apple’s MR devices will use a “double-layer white OLED + color film” solution, as it is difficult to mass-produce silicon-based RGB OLEDs and can only use the more mature “white OLED + color film” solution. However, the brightness of the “single-layer white OLED + color film” solution does not meet the needs of Apple’s MR devices, so in order to improve the brightness, Sony can only use the “double-layer white OLED + color film” solution, which not only increases the brightness but also improves the life.
