Sony’s New Patent Hints PS5 May Support PS3 Generation Peripherals Compatible

0

A new patent suggests that Sony may be trying to make older hardware, such as peripherals or handhelds, compatible with modern PS consoles. The patent appears to include older Sony hardware such as old media remotes, DualShock handles, and possibly even the PSP Go’s handheld by emulating it for use on the PS5.

The patented screenshot depicts an older DualShock, Sony Media Remote, PS Mouse, EyeToy, PS Move grip, and a memory card.

Sony has long since abandoned most of its technology, the closest to modern is the PS Move grip, which is still used to control the PS VR of the first generation.

What makes the patent even more interesting is that the peripherals appear to be primarily from the PS3 era, which may indicate that this is part of Sony’s recently reported engineering to emulate that system. ps3 games were recently added as a new feature for the new PS Plus subscription membership but only support cloud play.

While it’s conceivable that Sony is exploring how to make this old technology work through emulation, devices other than the PS Move are now unavailable through official purchase.
