A preliminary jailbreak is available for Sony’s PlayStation 5 console, enabling players to install unsigned or unofficial games.
News of the successful jailbreak comes from Lance McDonald, the old man who previously made a name for himself by releasing an unofficial patch that allowed Bloodborne Curse to run at 60 frames per second on PS4.
Lance McDonald shows opening the debug menu on the PS5 and successfully installing the PS4’s PKG file, the game’s backup file. As you can see from the video, the PS5 successfully installs Hideo Kojima’s horror game P.T., which has long been taken down by Konami.
However, Lance McDonald says that the jailbreak relies on a Webkit exploit as an entry point, so it can only be attempted on PS5s with firmware 4.03 and older (including PS5 digital), while higher firmware versions cannot currently be jailbroken as they are not susceptible to Webkit exploits.
In addition, while the exploit provides read/write access, it does not provide execute access. This means that although unofficial games can be installed, they cannot actually be run yet.
