Sony Group plans to produce 2 million PlayStation VR2 headsets by March next year, people familiar with the matter said, setting an ambitious outlook amid a sluggish global economy, Bloomberg reported.
Mass production of the virtual reality headset began in September and has yet to face supply chain constraints. Production figures could be adjusted based on the device’s sales momentum after its release early next year.
In the years since commercial products from companies like HTC and Oculus (now part of Meta) have been widely available, VR glasses are still evolving in validation. Sony’s roadmap for the PS VR2 shows that the device is expected to be more popular than the PS VR generation — which took eight months to reach 1 million sales. According to IDC data, Meta’s Quest 2 is currently the most popular VR headset, with shipments in its first quarter of availability According to IDC data, Meta’s Quest 2 is currently the most popular VR headset, shipping 2.8 million units in its first quarter of availability.
Sony hasn’t given an official price or specific release date for the PS VR2. Sony currently plans to start selling the headset in early 2023, which would coincide with the expected easing of supply chain bottlenecks for the PS5 console since its launch in late 2020, sources said. This would give the company enough headset and console production for a major marketing push. It should be noted that the PS VR2 will only be available when connected to the PS5 console.
