The Sony IMX8 is readying to launch the company’s first 100MP mobile sensor. Over the years, Samsung ISOCELL has held the only mobile sensors above 100MP. Now Sony is ready to take the bull by the horn, but with a different approach.

This coming sensor will not launch for flagship devices, but instead, it’d feature on mid-range smartphones. The first sensor from the Sony IMX8 series made its debut on the Honor 70 series. There is no in-depth information on this coming sensor from Sony. But it will make its debut on a mid-range device once it’s ready, hence we don’t expect it to be the best sensor from Sony.

Our source also confirmed the IMX9 series, which will be a more worthy competitor to Samsung’s high-end sensors. Possibly this line-up will launch a 200MP sensor for flagship devices or something more capable. Samsung has 200MP sensors in the work, and it’ll debut on coming flagship devices. One of such devices is the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra another might be the coming Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Sony on its part still holds the world’s largest mobile sensor on any device. The launch of this 100MP sensor will help solidify Sony’s dominance of the mobile sensor market. Samsung still maintains its second place directly under Sony as a major supplier for mobile camera sensors. In the coming years, will Samsung be able to close the gap and catch up with Sony? We will need to see how things unfold to get an answer to this question.
