Sony begins testing 1440p resolution mode support for PlayStation 5 consoles

Sony has started testing 1440p resolution support for its PlayStation 5 console, a highly requested addition by gamers. Testers will get a new PS5 system software beta today that includes 1440p support, an added game listing to the game library, and new social features.

The new 1440p video output option will allow PS5 users to select this resolution on compatible TVs and monitors. If the game supports 1440p, then native 1440p output will be supported, but otherwise 4K games will be downsampled to 1440p output via oversampling.

PS5 users with the beta software will be able to check if their connected HDMI display supports 1440p in the Screen and Video section of the PS5 dashboard. It should be noted that variable refresh rates are not supported at 1440p, and only 1080p and 4K are supported on the PS5.

This latest PS5 software update also includes the new Game List feature, which is designed to make it easier to organize the games on the machine. Players can create lists of games from the main game library, with each list supporting up to 100 games. In total, there is a limit of 15 game lists to which disc, digital and streaming games can be added.

Sony has also added new social features, including a request option to ask friends to start sharing their screens, as well as new notifications when joining a party to let players know when they can join a game their friends are playing, and will also be able to send stickers and voice messages during a party and easily compare the differences between 3D audio and regular stereo before selecting preferred settings.

Sony is working with beta testers today to evaluate this new PS5 software, which will likely be rolled out to all PS5 owners in the coming months.
