Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for Samsung Galaxy models said to beat Apple’s A17 next year

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 running in the Samsung Galaxy S23 series gets a CPU and GPU clock speed boost, giving the SoC higher performance in certain tasks. And a special Galaxy version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is coming next year, which, at least according to one source, could offer the highest single-core performance of any device, to the point of surpassing the A17 Bionic.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy may achieve single-core performance over 2000 points, but that may be with an older version of Geekbench.

On Twitter, RGcloudS started a thread talking about Samsung and TSMC’s next-generation manufacturing nodes. He talked about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, Qualcomm’s higher-performance variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that’s coming exclusively to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 lineup next year. The source claims that the new SoC will be able to deliver a single-core result of 2000 points, beating the A17 Bionic.

Given the recent launch of Geekbench 6, he may be referring to the scores achieved by the upcoming chipset when running Geekbench 5. For reference, the A16 Bionic scored around 1800+ points, and since the A17 Bionic is expected to focus on power efficiency rather than performance, the Galaxy’s Snapdragon 8 has the potential to be the new king of smartphone single-core performance.

A single-core and multi-core performance report of what was claimed to be the regular version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was leaked last week, showing the SoC beating the A16 Bionic in both tests, with a single-core score of 1930. Given that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy will likely run at higher CPU and GPU clock speeds, it’s not hard to believe that the latter will break the 2000 single-core score when running Geekbench 5.

The only question is, who will Qualcomm choose to mass-produce the Snapdragon 8, TSMC or Samsung? It is possible that Qualcomm will take a dual-source approach, with both TSMC and Samsung involved, but it is too early to make assumptions.
