According to a Weibo post by a reliable tipster, Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm will reveal the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus around May 20th. It is speculated that the smartphones running on the said chip will also be announced on that very day. The post also suggests that Snapdragon 7 gen 1, the mid-range chip, will also be launched simultaneously.
In the past weeks, multiple leaks and rumors suggested that Qualcomm has pushed back the release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 + chip to the second half of 2022. But in light of the new post on the Weibo Digital Chat Station, it seems like Qualcomm will reveal a chip code-named SM8475 this month. This is the codename for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 +. So, the reveal is coming sooner than expected.
Smartphones powered by this new chip are also speculated to be revealed on that very same day. The last week’s post by the same person on Weibo suggested that the first smartphone powered by SD8G1+ will be a domestic device. The post also indicated Qualcomm’s good relationship with Lenovo and that probably means Motorola will be the first brand to launch a smartphone with SD8G1+.
At the moment, there’s very little information available about the chip’s capability due to its absence from known benchmarking platforms. If past releases are any indication, this new chip from Qualcomm will have a higher clock speed and that also means the chip will be power-hungry. The thermals could be an issue.
Lastly, the Weibo post also says that the mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is also due next week. No specific date has been revealed.
