Strategy Analytics Mobile Component Technology (HCT) service’s newly released research report “2022 Q2 Smartphone Application Processor Market Share Tracker: Qualcomm Reaches Record High” points out that the global smartphone application processor market revenue in 2022 Q2 grew 26% to $8.9 billion. Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, Samsung LSI and ZTE ranked in the top five for smartphone application processor market revenue share.

Qualcomm maintained its leadership in the smartphone application processor market with a 40 percent revenue share, followed by MediaTek (26 percent) and Apple (25.5 percent).

5G application processor shipments account for 55% of smartphone application processor shipments in Q2 2022.

TSMC makes more than 80 percent of smartphone application processor shipments, Samsung Foundry’s major customer Qualcomm has shifted orders to TSMC in recent quarters.

Google and JLQ Technologies (a joint venture between Leadcore and Qualcomm) shipped more than 1 million smartphone application processors in Q2 2022.

Sravan Kundojjala, director of mobile component technology services at Strategy Analytics and author of the report, commented, “Qualcomm’s momentum in the high-end Android space drove its smartphone application processor revenue up 41 percent in Q2 2022, despite a 23 percent decline in shipments. Customer orders for the Samsung Galaxy S22 pushed Qualcomm’s application processor ASP to an all-time high, but Qualcomm may face headwinds from inventory corrections in the second half of 2022. Shipments of Samsung LSI’s Exynos smartphone application processors declined 46 percent year-over-year, but showed signs of a rebound in the mid-range market.”

Kundojjala continued, “Q2 2022 saw record quarterly revenue for MediaTek’s application processors, driven by a mix of high-end and ultra-high-end Tiangui 5G application processors. However, we expect MediaTek’s application processor shipments and revenues to decline in the second half of 2022 due to continued weakness in Android application processors in China. On the other hand, ZTE’s shipments grew 26% in Q2 2022 due to continued growth in T1 4G smartphones.”
