SK Hynix Yongin Semiconductor Cluster water supply problem solved

The second largest memory chip maker in South Korea has faced challenges in terms of water supply for the semiconductor cluster they plan to build in the city of Yongin, South Korea.

SK Hynix had previously announced their decision to invest 120 trillion won to build a semiconductor cluster in Yongin City and plans to draw 265,000 tons of water per day from the South Han River near Yeoju City for the plant’s production.

SK Hynix also requested permission from Yeoju City to build an industrial water plant in May 2021 in order to move forward with the construction of the plant, but the process was delayed due to a lack of agreement with Yeoju City.

SK Hynix had previously failed to reach an agreement with LIX City on the pumping of water and the construction of an industrial water plant because LIX City believed that the water plant near the industrial park and SK Hynix’s semiconductor cluster in Yongin City were causing inconvenience to local residents, and LIX City also believed that various measures to protect water resources were hindering the development of the city, and LIX City requested SK Hynix to resolve the inconvenience and promote the local economy. The city has asked SK Hynix to address the inconveniences and promote local economic development.

The latest reports from foreign media indicate that the water supply problem at SK Hynix’s Yongin Semiconductor Cluster was finally resolved on Monday, local time. The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, SK Hynix, Yeoju City and other relevant parties have reached an agreement, with the Korean side relaxing some of the restrictions and expanding the wastewater treatment facilities in Yeoju City, and the city agreeing to SK Hynix pumping water.
